Tips from Joel Lessem, CEO of Firmex from his talk for @STEMHub_ and @africa_hacks titled: Start up and scale up

- Buy a business plan software. It makes your proposition look professional and enable your planning
- Failure is not an option. If you fail, pick lessons, continue
Key factors for success

- Product/Market Fit: critical
- People / execution: important
- Capital: desired

Must go hand in hand
Commercial proof: Are there successful businesses emerging in this category? If there are no successes; the market is may be not ready or the product isn’t that useful

Market size & competition: size of target customers? Is the market fragmented or there is one dominant player?
If the market is fragmented, you have a higher chance of success as you may be able to take a piece of that pie

Timing: find out when the category started. You don’t want to jump in too early as tons of money is needed to educate audience. Jumping in late will not lead anywhere
Competition: are your competitor growing? If yes, this is a sign that the market want the product. Please pray for your competitor to keep growing 😂. Please think about how you want to win against the competitor in a sale process?
Raising capital is not a guaranteed path to success.

Funds can come from
- Venture Capital
- Angel Investors

You will need to understand and speak the investor language.
Pick your co-founder carefully!!! Founder conflict can lead to a failed business. It’s a long term relationship.

Don’t tie your identity with the business. If it fails, you will be psychologically devastated

If successful, it won’t be your business! Add employees! Delegate!
You can’t hire who you can’t fire. Be careful with mixing business with family.

You need the best team to win. Avoid the emotional connection that lead to partial judgement

I used to live in Finland. If it is not better than I left it. Don’t go there! You deserve better!

I did cleaning job for 4.5 years and they won’t give us any other type of jobs! I could not collect samples from patients recruited for my study! Being black was my sin!
If anyone spill any jargons to cajole you to go to Finland, show them my tweet. Let them tell us it is not true.

I picked race o. I left and never looked back. Please o, let our hustle shine eye o. One chance abroad dey o. Don’t go and enter one chance o. I did once.
Yes to Norway, you will get jobs in oil and gas. These days oil and gas is no longer booming. I need to check with my folks there for current info.

No to Finland. Sweden is in between.

I don’t want you to go Israelite waka like I did. I did 🇳🇬➡️🇫🇮 ➡️🇨🇦➡️🇺🇸. The hustle is real

Did you know that similar to the Canadian PR Programs, the US also have a merit-based immigration system to grant you a Green Card based on National Interest? If you possess Advanced Degrees (Masters and PhDs), you may be able to migrate to the US as a Greencard holder 💃!
And this time, no IELTS required 👏🏾🙌🏿! And age restrictions may not be a big problem (amen to this).

This Sunday, I am bringing Dr. Ozi to come and help us break down this process: requirements, how to get started, best practices for your green card application and so on.
You deserve to know there are multiple options for you and be able to go where you can have economic power.

Your degree is a power you hold and it’s your extraordinary ability. Information is power and I want to make sure you will get to milk the RETURN ON YOUR INVESTMENT.

This girl here, she was a child that her parents didn’t want that came accidentally (my head is strong 😂), she was a pepper-seller, she was a cleaner, she was a salesgirl, she had a couple of failed relationship / engagements, she has regular impostor syndrome moments.
she still think she doesn’t speak enough good English, and she didn’t get married until her mid-thirties.

But, she never stopped dreaming, planning, praying and fighting for what she believes in. She understands the power of positioning and clarity is her last name.
Every time she remembers who she is, she changes the game one more time. She is a nobody that is a somebody somewhere in her head so she continued to fight to be a somebody. In the process, she became a 3D-printing Queen and that changed her career and life-trajectory forever.

Let’s talk about getting jobs (picture from LinkedIn)!

I know some of you are in my inbox getting pissed about losing jobs and not getting the type of jobs you deserve. Listen! Tech skills are the new gold!
One person here wrote to me last week who got a job within 3 weeks of landing in Canada as a data analytics specialist with a starting salary of 80K. He came to ask if he lowballed himself. Yes, he did but it’s not a bad place to start from.
I did a session at #AfricanBussinessClub2020 discussing industry 4.0 and stressed Digital Marketing as one of these skills. You didn’t attend that session, you need to go find it and watch it. As a new immigrant, your competitive advantage is tech skills!
