Once in the 1990s my brother was a waiter in a small Mississippi town. Wearing a Star of David around his neck, he was often told to hide it unless he wanted trouble. He recalled to me once being asked by a patron "Are you a Jew, boy?"
My brother quickly and confidently responded "Nope!" & headed to the kitchen to hide his necklace. The restaurant was a Jim Crow era relic with a painted KKK long faded and chipped away on the building's back exterior. He distinctly recalled that. He knew better than to backtalk.
He quit a day later for fear of the man (or men) returning to the restaurant to beat him or worse. Small town. He played classical guitar and therefore was pretty well known by locals who enjoyed his playing. He had a big mop of curly black hair. He was 6'3. Hard to miss.
Years and years later as I moved from Texas back to D.C., I plotted a map and sought out my brother for advice. He told me, don't drive through Mississippi at all if you dont have to and dont do it at night. And if you must, dont stop. Just drive right through. Obey all laws.
Overly cautious or no, his time in that state left a lasting impression.
There is no big moral to this specific story honestly. It is just a shame that we are here in the 21st century and not a whole lot is different for a lot of people because of angry, racist whites.

On 495 heading South from Maryland to VA this afternoon, this was one caravan of Trump supporters that stretched for over 2 minutes. I counted at least 45 vehicles. Minutes before I saw a smaller caravan of similar adorned vehicles, totaling roughly 12. Pardon video quality.
I also observed anti-abortion protesters standing on an overpass. They stood above traffic near a banner asking Pres. Trump to save "pre-born" babies. Another vehicle I saw was covered in red painted handprints with pro-Trump messages scrawled on its rear window and trunk.
Many of the trucks and SUVs in the first caravan had hazard lights on and were driving 10-15 miles below the speed limit in middle most lane, causing traffic to bottleneck at times or force drivers to abruptly shift lanes as they came barreling up 495 at the usual 60mph.
Coming up: SCOTUS oral arguments today in consolidated case US v Briggs, where justices will consider whether a 5 year statute of limitation on rape charges and convictions applies in the military. More to come later for @CourthouseNews.
Amicus from Congress supporting US: "The provisions in the USCMJ that address rape in the military have been understood for decades to reflect Congress’ intent that those who commit the crime of rape should not be permitted to escape justice by hiding behind the passage of time"
Good morning. Feel like talking about the 25th Amendment today? Join me @ 10:15AM ET on this thread & I'll break down the legislation introducing this Constitutionally-backed commission weighing a president's capacity and fitness for the nation's highest office. @CourthouseNews
Pulling one of the last arrows in a quiver carried by Democrats increasingly disarmed of late by Trump’s behavior since his Covid-19 diagnosis, legislation is announced triggering the 1st steps of reviewing POTUS fitness as provided by the 25th Amendment. courthousenews.com/house-unveils-…
Per the CDC, in consultation with WH physician regarding VP Pence's possible exposure to people with Covid-19, "based on the description" of Pence's movement to his doc, Pence is *not* a close contact of any known persons with Covid
This seems strange if only and this is the bare minimum -because Pence was at the Rose Garden event on Sept. 26.
It is not what Biden has said. Not even close. But President Trump has been saying he would dispute election results that don't fall in his favor since 2016.
When Joe Biden was asked on television during a town hall with CNN this month if he would accept the election results, he replied: "Sure, the full results. Count every vote."
At this morning's hearing where lawmakers will discuss civil rights, voting rights, oversight of the Justice Dept's Civ Rights Division, Eric Dreiband is a no show despite an invitation from Steve Cohen, D-TN chairman of Subcmte on the Constitution, Civil Rights & Civil Liberties
By keeping this committee in the dark, the department keeps the public in the dark, Cohen says, then:
"Asking Bill Barr to do anything is fruitless, but I will call once again, as my able and learned and wise counsel suggested, asking Mr. Barr to ask Mr. Dreiband to come here."
In response Rep. Johnson, R-LA says of Cohen's suggestion that Dreiband "chickened out": "It's just ridiculous and theatrics. It's what all the Judiciary Committee has become for years, theatrics."
There was no subpoena issued for Dreiband, instead they sent a "snarky letter."
