I think the polls will be proven right and the fevered speculation about post-election chaos will be proven wrong

The thing about democracy is that it is ultimately controlled by elites who interpret the national narrative and govern in accordance with that interpretation. The Trump spasm was a temporary aberration.

Whatever we can persuade a majority to vote for is what is. In this case, “had enough of that dude” is the thing.

I have never been a “highly engaged” political participant or observer and only have been so sporadically since 2016. It is amazing to me that anyone attends professionally to such an essentially vacuous process one cycle after the next.

But becoming marginally more engaged helps me understand those who have been doing it for decades end up so vapid; it’s impossible not to given the reality with which one is engaged

There is a certain detachment you need to see the comedy of things; I proceed from the assumption that the “universal homogeneous state”is the final equilibrium from which any further “progress” must necessarily entail cannibalizing the rights and freedoms of some other group

And virtually everything is explainable within that framework. I understand why this perspective is hateful to those who hold the contrary view — and the suspicion that it must be true is what drives the antagonism

I am not especially invested in my intuitions being confirmed by events, it may simply be a fluke that my intuitions have been an unerring guide to the events of the past four years. It will not be a trauma if they are utterly debunked by events.

I am simply a man making palaver at a perpetual online cocktail party
