Initial thoughts on the election, a thread:

While we do not know the results of the election, the fact that it is this close is a devastating exposure of the Democratic Party, a right-wing party of Wall Street and the military. 1/
The Democrats had no policy to address the central issue in the election: the coronavirus pandemic and the mass social crisis that has been produced by the bipartisan policy of the ruling elite. There was no “New Deal,” just the continuation of the same. 2/
This is not just a question of one election. The Democrats, the oldest capitalist party in the world, long ago rejected any policy of social reform. The election of Trump in 2016 was bound up with this and the right-wing politics of the Obama administration. 3/
A critical role has been played by the pseudo-left’s promotion of the politics of racial division (“white privilege,” etc.) The politics of race, which represents the interests of sections of the upper middle class, is hostile to the interests of workers of all races. 4/
The shift of politics to the right has been facilitated by the trade unions, the corporatist instruments of management and the state, which have worked for decades to suppress any working-class opposition to the dictates of the ruling class and the growth of inequality. 5/
Over the past year, the Democrats have worked to cover up the fascistic conspiracies of Trump, including the plots to kidnap and murder Democratic governors. They are terrified above all of anything that will spark social unrest and popular opposition to capitalism. 6/
The broad mass of workers and youth are moving to the left. There is growing interest in socialism and hostility to capitalism. But the interests of workers can find no expression in the existing political system. 7/
The American political system is rotten to the core. This is an expression of the nature of capitalist society and the outcome of decades of growing social inequality and endless war. It is, moreover, a global process, expressed in different forms in every country. 8/
The claim by Sanders, the DSA, Jacobin, et. al. that the interests of workers and opposition to fascism can be waged through the Democratic Party stands exposed as a reactionary fraud. 9/
Whatever the outcome of the election, the class struggle will and must develop. The working class must be armed with a socialist program in opposition to both parties and the entire capitalist system. This means joining and building the Socialist Equality Party. 10/

Most notable about the soporific #Debates2020 is that is being conducted as if this is a normal election, that it is not being held under conditions of a massive breakdown of political institutions of American capitalism. What is the reality? 1/
The president of the United States is actively conspiring to foment right-wing violence and override the results of the elections, depending on his position in the White House and control over the apparatus of the state. 2/
A pandemic that has killed more than 210k people in the United States, as a result of the criminal policies of the entire ruling class, with neither party proposing anything besides the continuation of the back-to-work and back-to-school campaign. 3/

Yesterday, Trump administration officials met with Martin Kulldorff, the Harvard professor that @jacobinmag interviewed and presented as the leading authority on responding to the pandemic. Kuldorff, Atlas and Azar discussed "herd immunity".

Jacobin, which is affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America, has aligned itself with the homicidal policy of the Trump administration. There has been no statement from @DemSocialists repudiating Sunkara and Jacobin.

This is the interview @jacobinmag published with Martin Kuldorff to demand the reopening of schools under unsafe conditions, a policy he is now discussing directly with the Trump White House: jacobinmag.com/2020/09/covid-…

Engels, a thread-quote: 1/ "When one individual inflicts bodily injury upon another such that death results, we call the deed manslaughter; when the assailant knew in advance that the injury would be fatal, we call his deed murder.
