- Mark schemes are subjective & ultmly reductive
- Ts often use 'gut feeling'
- What does 'good' writing look like? Intangible?
- CJ relies on Ts tacit understanding and guild knowledge
My q. is who is in the guild? At least a mark scheme is transparent. In my research on Standard/Non-standard language judgments hinge on descriptors like 'accurate', 'intelligible' or 'correct' etc.
Will CJ simply entrench these biases/prejudices held by members of the 'guild'?
If I can boil it down: authenticity, writing as social practice & personal response 1st, combined with analysis, metalanguage and exam prep - but difficult balance with time pressures!
Two great keynotes of Palvinder Singh and Geoff Petty to finish on.
I got a lot from #SETConf20, & the online platform came very closer to imitating dynamics of a face-to-face conference + unique online aspects like gamification.
Full of insight & delivered in straight-forward and convincing fashion.
My summary and impressions:
-need to self-define purpose & values, instead of being 'not school or university'
- under-investment is the other perennial issue, but Doel thinks this will change (2/11)
We are now in 'post-market' economy with greater intervention:
-a strategic/entrepreneurial state
-greater regionalism and continuing devolution
-in discourse of Brexit, 'scaling up the left-behind places'
-clear major role for FE (3/11)
