It's like the planet has a fever.

October 2020 helps show the impacts of a changing climate. The Arctic did not freeze due to warmth stored in vast areas of open water - this was a record breaking month for lack of ice.

The air temperature was extremely high compared to normal.
The minimum ice extent did not beat the all time low record in September.

But we did drop all time record low levels through parts of October. Siberian seas suffered the heaviest lack of ice. Image
You can see how much warmer than normal the sea surfaces were through October here.

A baking hot summer and serious lack of ice meant that the refreeze struggled.

The weather pattern also meant that records were achievable more easily.
This is the entire world in one view.

Impressive hot and cold shots (record breaking) in North America stand out. Arctic swirls in extreme anomalous warmth.

South America and southern Africa records exceptional heat along with the Middle East.
Impressive cold month for Canada and parts of the USA.

This is entirely reasonable in a changing climate, cold can still happen and will still happen.

Just because it is cold in your backyard, it doesn't mean it is cold everywhere.
A closer look based around the equator.

La Nina is responsible for the cold blob in the Pacific.

5 years in a row of category 5 hurricanes. This has not happened in recorded history going back to 1851.

#Iota is about to make landfall as a powerful category 5 storm. Nicaragua and Honduras can't take another major hurricane. It was only 2 weeks since category 4 #Eta.
The track of #Eta overlaid projected landfall of #Iota is insane. Two major hurricanes within a fortnight in November. Eta struck Nicaragua on 3 November.

Check out this comparison by @WeatherProf.

Heartbreaking.

Here are some of the beasts from the last 5 years.

This is just cruel.

#Iota is the 30th named Tropical Storm and is expected to become a major Hurricane by early next week

Iota is heading for Central America, likely to hit communities still trying to recover from Hurricane Eta which struck only a few days ago.

#Iota is the 30th named storm of this record breaking hurricane season. Winds will be violent but attention quickly turns to flooding potential, again.

Major landfall is looking likely early next week. Honduras ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณand Nicaragua ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฎ in the immediate firing line.
The track of hurricane #Eta is first image and latest forecast for #Iota from @NHC_Atlantic is the second image.

It is important to note that there is still track and intensity uncertainty and it is crucial to follow official forecasts at nhc.noaa.gov ImageImage

Extremely violent thunderstorm in Brisbane, Australia ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ delivered enormous #hailstones.

Catastrophic damage costing over $50 million.

Short thread...

This is insane. From Brisbane ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

One of the worst #hail storms this decade.

Some aerial footage of the damage.

While extremely dangerous, this is a nightmare for insurance.

This is the sound of one of the strongest storms ever witnessed on Planet Earth.

This is super typhoon #RollyPH
(#Goni) striking Albay, Philippines ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ a few hours ago.

A historic event.

โš ๏ธ Destruction in the Phillippines ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ is inevitable with catastrophic landfall expected in the next 24 hours โš ๏ธ

Super #Typhoon Goni is the strongest storm on the planet right now.

The centre of the storm will pass almost directly over the capital, Manila.
Category 5 hurricane equivalent as #Goni approaches.

Wave height reports of 60 feet (18 m) right now offshore.

While large parts of the Arctic remain ice free, temperatures remain extremely high compared to normal for this time of year.

Temperature is unable to drop much below freezing where open water remains. In the past, ice cover would allow temperatures to be more like -25 ยฐC.
We are observing the vicious loop which amplifies climate change in the Arctic.

Warmer Arctic = more ice melt = more open water = more energy absorbed from sun in summer = warmer water = more ice melt = more open water...
