1/?

Okay, all my thoughts as of 8 PM on Thursday on the election. Stay with me before you get mad.

1. I think they’ll call Pennsylvania & Georgia for Biden, either tonight or tomorrow AM.

2. I think they call Arizona for Trump. If they do, people at AP and Fox should be fired.
3. I think they eventually call Nevada for Trump, too.

4. I think the margins are super narrow in PA and GA. I think there will be recounts. I think the way those turn out - especially in PA - is anyone’s guess.
5. I don’t think there’s a widespread, concerted effort by Democrats to steal the election through nefarious means.

6. I DO think that there may very well be election irregularities that we need to get to the bottom of and the courts will need to decide on.
7. I thought Trump’s press conference was bad. Unbecoming of the leader of the free world and plenty of it didn’t appear tethered to the truth. Also didn’t help his cause. I thought he looked whiny and defeated.

8. I DON’T think his presser was some enormous threat to democracy.
8a. I’m not interested in hearing that Trump’s press conference was an attack on democracy from people who have told me for four years that Donald Trump has been a Russian asset since 1987, operating at Putin’s direction as a Manchurian candidate.
8b. I think the media lit their collective credibility about election integrity and norms on fire between the way they’ve covered “Russian collusion” and by providing a platform for both Hillary Clinton and Stacey Abrams to float conspiracy theories suggesting they were robbed.
9. Back to the election.

I think that we don’t get clarity on who won the election for weeks. I think things will go really sideways after this thing is called. I don’t know why people aren’t preparing or bracing for that.

I think we are VERY far from the finish line.
10. Because of that, I think it’s incumbent on elected republicans to go on their record about what’s going on. I think a lot of them are hiding so that they can throw in with whichever team wins this.

That’s cowardly. Put yourselves out there. Pick a side. Have some integrity.
10a. I can’t help but think that a lot of republicans are hiding because they would rather be rid of Trump than fight.

If your calculation on the well-being of our democracy is that narrow, you are either a coward or a fool, and you don’t deserve the office you hold.

End.
PS

11. A huge part of the problem is that certain states do a horrible job of counting votes. We should encourage better policies - no same-day registration, no late mail-in votes, voter ID laws, etc. - that a) help get accurate numbers quickly and b) increase public confidence.

🧵Thread🧵

With Biden having been declared the winner (for now) by major media outlets, I figured it would be a good time to share some of the people who’ve threatened retribution against Trump supporters.

The list is a lot longer than I had anticipated it would be👇
It wouldn’t be right to start with anyone but @RBReich, who I will remind you was **Secretary of Labor** under Bill Clinton and is here calling for the extralegal prosecution of his political opponents as part of a truth and reconciliation commission. Image
You would think such an idea was roundly refuted, just one blue check going off the reservation.

You would be wrong. Here’s @MSNBC’s @chrislhayes, one of the key voices on one of the largest networks, echoing the same sentiment. ImageImage

Lots of people - left and right - seem to have concluded the election is over and that just seems like preposterous wishcasting to me.
There are obvious, well-documented, irregularities in key states. There are hundreds of thousands or ballots to count. There is already one recall and plenty of lawsuits to settle.
and like has no one paid attention to 2020 so far?

Very excited to hear from every corner of the conservative movement about how, if Trump does in fact lose, it confirms their priors about what the future of the GOP should be.
“Trump’s defeat makes it clear: Republicans must be the party of dignity, low taxes, and country clubs undivided by politics” @BulwarkOnline
“Trump was held back by the deep state and softie cucks like Drew Holden. Prepare for war!!!” @ half of my mentions

Okay last one.

I think that the way Trump is talking about the election is bad. I think he should absolutely fight irregularities - and call attention to them - but should be fighting in court with confidence that the system will, eventually, work. He isn’t doing that.

BUT...
The pearl clutching about it is insufferable from the same crowd who continues to give voice to Hillary Clinton as she peddles the conspiracy theory that the election was “stolen” from her.

Trump added his usual flair, but he’s following her precedent.

Both of these undermine our institutions & public confidence around the election. But it seems *enormously* clear to me that Trump is at least doing it w/ a lot more evidence of irregularity that could’ve cost him the election and is doing it before votes have been certified.

As someone who was very vocally Never Trump in 2016 I would rather die in a fire than throw in with these people.
Also, for anyone who hasn’t unfollowed me yet, I’m not some former never trumper turned died in the blood believer. I’ll find the thread I did a while back. It’s just that my thoughts on the never trump crowd have nosedived more than my thoughts on Trump.

I have lost my ability to take this seriously
I apologize to my followers. I know this is a serious time. But I simply cannot muster maturity any longer.
“Hi guys! Sorry to be a pain, but could we ask you to hit ‘submit’ on those vote counts you said you would send the other day? A few folks in America are curious, but let me know if you need more time!!”
