Want to know how badly the Democrats fucked up 2020? Consider this:

The party helped Amy McGrath raise more than $88 million for her dud campaign.

$88 million is also the total amount the party raised to win back state legislative chambers ahead of 2021’s redistricting.
Not only did Democrats likely fail to flip a single state legislative chamber, they actually lost New Hampshire's house and senate.

Now, Republicans control 59 chambers nationally with trifectas (house, senate, governorship) in 23 states. Democrats have 37 and 15 respectively.
The damage is compounded by the fact Supreme Court precedent that partisan gerrymandering claims are non-justiciable and the fact that the Trump administration stopped the census counting early, which means we're dealing with less accurate numbers.
What's the end result?

GOP, with carte blanche from the SCOTUS, gerrymanders the hell out of the states it controls. Democrats have less accurate demographic information with which to fight back—to the extent they even can.

And those maps will be in place for the next decade.
Democrats had 2 election cycles to correct for this—and both were favorable: 2018 and 2020.

Midterms typically favor the opposition party.

Unpopular presidents who preside over weak economies are generally vulnerable despite incumbent advantage.

Yet, this is where we're at.
Where does this leave us as a country?

With a built-in GOP advantage in the legislatures as we face climate change, the pandemic, and the economic mess we're in.

Democrats needed to win this year down-ballot. They needed to and they didn't.
It's not like they didn't know the importance. In 2010, Democrats fell asleep as the GOP poured money into state races, winning 54 of the 99 chambers and gerrymandering their advantages at the state and national level. The GOP House stood despite a 2 million vote deficit in 2012.
Joe Biden even promised he would lead Democrats to victory in the state houses back in March. So what happened?
For the TL;DR crowd:

I, for one, am looking forward to MSNBC demonstrating its journalistic rigor by holding the Biden administration accountable to the people.
Come on, you guys, I’m serious here. MSNBC’s newsroom is like right out of an Aaron Sorkin show!

Who better than Rachel Maddow, Joy Reid, and Brian Williams to keep ‘em honest?!
We can all go back to brunch knowing they’ve got our backs! #SquadGoals

In no world should the Democrats listen to Kasich. Centrism failed hard in 2016 and was on track to fail hard again in 2020. Had it not been for COVID-19, Trump would have taken this in a walk. As is, conservative Dems down ballot got shellacked while progressives did well.
As is, Biden’s margins in key states were narrow and his win didn’t translate down-ballot, indicating tepid support. Dems have to deliver.
People don’t want less right now from their government. There is a historic public health crisis and a historic economic crisis. Now is the time for Dems to be bold.

If not, they’ll condemn us the next fascist.

It is truly remarkable how many people on here viscerally reject the idea that our staggeringly unequal economy is in any way contributing to the rise of far-right extremism.

Luckily, you don't have to take my word for it (thread)
Here's a 2009 DHS report with a clear warning that "prolonged economic downturn...could create a fertile recruiting environment for rightwing extremists and even result in confrontations between such groups and government authorities..." fas.org/irp/eprint/rig…
Here's a 2008 report from the European Commission warning that "unfair competition for scarce resources or an absence of prospects for a good future" are paths to "militancy and terrorism." clingendael.org/sites/default/…

This is the home of Joseph Morrison, one of the Michigan men recently arrested for his plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Can we acknowledge that maybe economic circumstances play a role in radicalizing people?
No one is fated to be a far right terrorist. This is learned and fostered by governmental neglect.

We need to make sure that people feel they have a real stake in society.

When Trump took office, 40% of the population was struggling to afford basics.
We are reaping what we've sowed over four decades of trickle-down neoliberal policies. We've brought America's population to the brink. In 2019, it was reported that 78% of full-time workers were living paycheck-to-paycheck.

As media combs her record, it’s time to talk about Kamala Harris’ “Back on Track” re-entry program for first-time, nonviolent drug sales offenders. It was nowhere near as successful as media has painted it.

A thread. jacobinmag.com/2019/09/kamala…
Harris’ stated aim with Back on Track was to reduce prison overcrowding. But rather than overcriminalization, Harris had a theory.

As she told a crowd in 2010, “the one most effective issue we could address on this issue of prison overcrowding, is this issue of recidivism.”
Back on Track was really a pilot program designed to prove that recidivism could be reduced.

With that in mind, what Harris’ office did was select a narrow group of offenders—young, first-time, nonviolent drug sales offenders—and cull from there those deemed likely to succeed.
