Cancel culture is a competitive mechanism.

For the left it’s way to keep effective adversaries from rising.

For mediocrities on “right” it’s bread and butter mechanism to avoid competition from smarter, braver and more talented people.

Applies also to Populism Inc.
In fact, precisely because the right is designed to be limited to weak, unaesthetic cognitive mediocrities who play second fiddle to cultural superiors on left, cancel culture on the right is an essential feature not just a hypocritical bug.
The system can tolerate smart attractive talented effective people on the left (though thanks to bio Leninism they’re in increasingly short supply)

The system cannot tolerate such people on the right, as it would collapse if smart talented effective people were allowed to rise

There is a middle-ground between "just a flu" and the position that the Covid numbers justify the extreme measure of shutting down the entire economy and sending tens of millions of people into unemployment, and the full consequences thereof.
There are related questions such as whether New York's severe situation justifies holding the entire country hostage. An urban/rural element.

And, furthermore, whether the lockdown measures (which aren't a real quarantine) are even that helpful to stop spread.
Indeed, it is quite possible that the half-measure lockdown in place in much of America combines the worst elements of the real quarantine with the worst elements of the herd immunity strategy
