Instead of classifying Autism as a social deficit disorder, it’s crucial for society to start recognizing that Autistics actually DO have distinct and beautiful social cultures, diverse/complex social needs and the ability to form deep, meaningful connections. #ActuallyAutistic
What has disrupted my ability to form healthy relationships/friendships is society’s rigid, standardized practice of socialization that values verbal communication, conformity, and that’s groups people together based on superficial similarities that I as an Autistics don’t see.
I was conditioned to think that Autistics are unable to have lasting connections or intimacy without intervention or therapy. However, since exploring my own natural instincts I have learned the opposite is true-
My ability to deeply feel and connect is actually unlimited.
When it comes to communication, society could really benefit from learning these lessons from Autistics: That what isn’t spoken is just as valuable as what is, true intimacy doesn’t need to be physical, and that differences aren’t deficiencies, but identities. #AutismAcceptance
