76% to 81% of white evangelicals voted for Trump according to the NYT and NPR. That’s the highest percentage of a people group aside from Republican. (1)

Now an overwhelming amount of white evangelical leaders were posting Black squares back in June. Many with #Listening and talking about learning.

Of course I do not know who any of these evangelical leaders voted for.

Neither do I care, their vote is their own and I respect that. However, what I do care about is co-opting the fight of Black people to look like they care about racial equality, I do care about optical allyship,

I do care about posts uploaded just 5 months ago saying they are listening, they are learning, they want “God to open their eyes” and then 76% of the people they influence supported an overtly racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, violent, narcissist.

And I know, I know they can’t control what those they influence do with their votes (though many try, illegal as it may be), but they sure can acknowledge this reality and realize those they influence are not listening, not learning about racism, not opening their eyes.

And perhaps, perhaps! That is because they haven’t either. I have said it before, and I’m say it again. BIPoC aren’t safe inside white evangelical churches.

Until they address the clear systemic issues rooted in white evangelical theology that lead to racism; misogyny; xenophobia and discrimination against LGBTQ+ people, there isn’t one BIPoC that’ll be safe from abuse inside the white evangelical church.
