I use to listen to conservative radio on my phone at work minding my own business. Then a guy from Iowa transferred to my store. He is my age and a former veteran. He started talking to me about what I was listening to.

He told me he use to be a tea party republican and listened to Hannity and Mark Levin back in the day. However now he was a liberal.

He once told me in jest "what would you do if I wore my AOC shirt in here one day?"

I chuckled and said "nothing. I may not agree with her but I wouldn't blink twice if you wore it."

Over the course of the next few weeks we continued to have real conversations at work about everything. Philosophy was what he was really interested in and old grunge music.

We then had this interaction

Him: "You know you think a certain way about policy that is polar opposite of me. That is a good thing because I enjoy our talks."

Even though we didn't get into great detail about policy mainly just that he was liberal and me a conservative

Me:"I enjoy our talks as well. I have learned a lot. However, I bet we are a lot closer on policies than you think."

This is exactly how people are programmed to behave. I have always wondered why he turned away from the tea party.

In fact I had invited him over to have dinner and talk. It was the beginning of COVID and he was extremely worried about the disease. So much so that he wore his mask in the car by himself.

I am very anti-mask. I hope perhaps one day we will sit down and have that discussion.
