I'm really tired of the Brampton slander in general, but especially over COVID.

We're a diverse and rapidly growing working-class town y'all love to point at & laugh, with a nice hint of racism on the side, but we keep on working and dying doing the jobs no one else wants.

🧵
This place is home to:

Truckers & logistics workers driving into hotspots across North America, day and night, so you can have the essential supplies you so desperately need - like the toilet paper you idiots kill each other for.
Factory & warehouse workers doing the overtime so the economy keeps moving & you can get that overnight delivery of crap you probably don't actually need but it makes you happy during these trying times & you order it anyway because you want to treat yourself. Well yea, fuck.
Drivers spending all day, every day, on the roads crisscrossing this bloody region so you can get your precious overnight delivery of toilet paper you don't actually need to hoard or to drop you off somewhere because you're important.
Retail workers all of you were just hailing as heroes like 6 months ago busting their asses restocking shelves with your favourite cupcake sprinkles so you can have a fun time pretending you're on Zumbo's Just Desserts (more like Nailed It, but whatever) as you work from home.
Places of worship which act as food banks and community centres, because there also haven't been enough investments in these parts over decades, that have been essentially shut down and breaking said communities for months now.
Busy daycares and schools because not only do we have one of the youngest populations in Canada, but people out here are doing jobs that they cant do from home and have no choice but to send their kids back so they can provide for their families and keep a paycheque going.
Hospitals and local health care at the brink because of chronic underfunding for decades in Brampton that has left us with far fewer beds, infrastructure, and support than our neighbours, including cities and towns with similar or smaller populations.
Yea we know there is a fucking pandemic happening right now.

We know we need to flatten the curve, that we got to stay healthy.

We're working hard at it like everyone else, navigating confusing communications and instructions from across Canada.

Ethnic Media, Accountability & Disruption

A thread on my observations from years of engaging desi media in Canada, in light of the well-deserved criticism of RED FM & the call for long-overdue reform/rethinking of male/uncle dominated desi media being led by brown women.

🧵
INTRO

Want to start by saying desi media plays a key critical role in connecting the diaspora with what is happening back in Punjab/South Asia and hyper-local issues, as well as communicating in a mother tongue that makes the news accessible in a way the mainstream isn’t.

1/
CONTEXT

1st off, important to understand that many desi TV/radio shows/papers are operated from the side of people’s desks & arent always “day jobs” for those involved. These are often passion projects being done part-time.

RED FM one of the few large professional players.

Finally got to watch @sunny_hundal's #YoungSikhAndProud.

I appreciated it & recommend others to watch it as well.

There are parts I do not like, but the doc deserves much more nuanced criticism/praise than it has received, IMHO.

This will probably be a long thread...oh well.
Ill start with this - I consider Sunny a friend I got to really know during the @WorldSikhOrg #AskCanadianSikhs stuff we were doing in Canada to challenge the media's coverage of our community.

Sunny was INTEGRAL to that fight & defended our community in a way not many could.
I traveled across Canada with Sunny during that time in 2018 & I got to really like the man.

He cares about the community, fighting foreign interference, etc.

While we dont agree on everything I have immense respect for him. I dont question his loyalty to the Sikh Community.

Breaking news & thread incoming:

@dineshbhatia of @IndiainToronto & @HCI_Ottawa spoke at a recent Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh Canada (HSS) event.

HSS is the international arm of the far right Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu_Swa…

Why is this a big deal?

1/
Let me unpack this for you.

HSS=RSS

The RSS is an Indian right-wing, Hindu nationalist (Hindutva), & paramilitary organization.

Widely condemned as an extremist organization, and reported on by the likes of @CIA, @amnesty, & @hrw

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rashtriya…

2/
. @hrw re: RSS in its 2017 Report:

“Vigilante violence aimed at religious minorities, marginalized communities, and critics of the government—often carried out by groups claiming to support the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—became an increasing threat in India in 2017"
