Tahajjud is the term given when you sleep & wake up later to pray.
- if it’s immediately after Isha(as in Ramadān) it’s called TARAWEEH
- If you look at the number of raka’ahs to be prayed, it’s called WITR
- If you look at what’s more in the Salah, it’s QIYAMUL LAYL
Ruling?
- It’s Mustahab (liked)
No. Of Raka’ahs?
- odd number of raka’ahs
- can be 3,5,7,9,11,13
- Rasulullah SAW didn’t go beyond 13
Mode of recitation?
- Can be silent or aloud
When?
- From after Isha till Fajr
- Anytime in between
It’s preferred to prolong the standing during Tahajjud. It’s allowed to repeat the verses or surahs you memorized so as to stand as longer as you can.
It’s not compulsory to pray 11/13 Raka’ahs
- U can pray the number you can maintain every night, say 3 or 5 to start with
Allah loves ibadah which is consistent, so when you start don’t quit.
- if you slept off & couldn’t wake up, Allah will give you reward as if you prayed. That’s if u’re consistent
If you’re sleepy & exhausted during the Salah,
- go & sleep
It’s also permissible to make up the Tahajjud/Witr during the day if you missed it at night.
- But instead of praying odd number(witr) pray even number Raka’ahs.
Ex. U’re if u oft pray 3 Raka’ahs at night, you’ll now pray 4 during the day when u missed it.
If you can pray it at the last third of the night, it’s even better. Bc Allah descends, accepting du’ahs of those who are awake & praying.
Most importantly, don’t miss Salatul Subh, bc of Tahajjud.
If you pray witr(e.g 3 Raka’ahs) immediately after Isha and then you wake up during the night to pray, don’t repeat the witr, pray even number Raka’ahs.
May Allah help us all, Āmin.
