You always need a hook for any speech, pitch, or talk.

Here are a few simple ways to think about it.

1. Make it a question

You can make them vague or specific.

"Why are you here?"

"What's the purpose?"

"You know that feeling?"
2. Make it a quote

These can be quotes from outside sources or the topic your speaking on.

In a trial, you can use quotes from the actual witnesses.

With outside sources, they can come from anywhere.

"Joy cometh in the morning"

"We will fight"

"Strength and honor"
3. Make it a fact or statistic

This needs to be powerful.

Create a sense of shock or awe.

Make your audience want to know more.

A regular fact or statistic is not enough.

It needs to feel like they got punched in the mouth with its force.
4. Make it a story

Drop your audience in a high tension moment of a story.

Most of the time, that's not the beginning.

Think of Fight Club.

Malcolm Gladwell.

Even Star Wars.
Use 1 of these 4 tactics and your hook will land.

Once that happens, then you can start getting to the good stuff.

Without a hook, your audience will never hear the rest.

Find a source of inspiration from your own life.

An experience, memory, or even a piece of pop culture that you can draw on.
