Our entire economic system is a perverse penal system where not only are wages drastically unevenly spread but punishment and control. For those in corporate settings being late is a wave and a laugh about traffic , for those working minimum wage it’s a strict recorded offense
A day off to do something important or needing to go pick up a sick kid is a “no problem” for some while for many it is a bureaucratic process with permission something to be groveled for, and a source of dread and unease because it could easily lead to a loss of employment .
This creates a vast gulf of empathy as a protected class pretends to not understand why things aren’t so simple and obvious for those whose exploited labor directly funds their salary. As healthcare was tied to employment , and retirement untethered and pinned to the stock market
The social contract was broken & a forever crisis was created. Complete loyalty to employers & the markets was demanded which created a besieged lower class threatened with acute economic violence and a upper middle class made complaint via the threat of future economic violence
The middle class was purposely cast between these two to not have the same level of punishment as the lower class but also kept on the absolute razor’s edge economically so they have just enough to inch by but relatively little freedom economically, ensuring low-cost compliance.
This understanding of the current system , its motivations , its levers of pressure and its inherent cruelty and violence is purposefully obscured from most analysis because addressing these points could shut off the wealth vacuum which has funneled upwards for 40 years now .
With coronavirus , healthcare is still tied to employment , ability to comply with safety procedures is still tied to your employment , ability to survive is tied to you employment . Which created a bifurcated and inherently frustrated experience for all , and dangerous fissures
As those who were shielded economically and had previously been shielded from the violence of exploited labor just simply did not understand why those who had little protections were being so “selfish “ and “stupid “ as the govt printed trillions of dollars to keep them employed.
Those at the very top welcomed this fabricated frustration as it could prove very useful in the future. They continued to jet around the world and hold parties with private nurses at the door administering hard to procure even for hospitals rapid tests as all below argued. 
SAFETY & INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY became seared into the public consciousness . As an ultimately shallow cult around SAFETY formed, no actual actions to allow being safe easier for all regardless of status or income emerged. Sacrifice was never demanded to be distributed equally
This precipitous climb upwards in inequality since the 1970s combined with the experimental economic policy of QE creates a market mirage which must be maintained at all costs. With labor gutted & the creation of the “stateless” gig worker they have an infinite pool to exploit
