Things we know about US cities, Mayors, cars, & climate change:
- US car industry mostly sells deadly, polluting SUVs/trucks
- This has made carbon pollution from vehicles leading source of pollution in US
- Violent driver assault/killing of US pedestrians/cyclists is rising
- Most drivers don't need giant trucks/SUVs
- The car industry has a 120-year track record of lying, cheating, and bullying on every aspect of human health/safety/the environment
- The car industry also advertises/promotes violent/dangerous behaviors to sell trucks/SUVs
- Car industry has betrayed promises on air pollution & climate change since dawn of air quality regulation
- Car industry lied its ass off about diesel & fuel economy
- Car industry is leading cause of traumatic injury on earth, & leading cause of death for humans under 40
- Cities govern ~ 100% of streets within jurisdictions, including parking, road width, speed limits, and safety interventions like bulb-outs, bike lanes, and speed bumps
- Cities also *own most of the land* beneath these streets, meaning they can change how that land is used
- Many US Mayors claim to be "climate Mayors"
- Most "climate Mayors" have done little to nothing to address scourge of violent, polluting drivers in SUVs and trucks
- Most "climate Mayors" take weeks to approve new car pavement but months/years to approve new bus/bike lanes
- US needs an actual movement of Mayors for climate action, focused on banning deadly, polluting products car industry is dumping on our streets
- US Mayors need to stop playing footsie with carmakers & start looking at higher and better uses of the land owned by their taxpayers
- Any US Mayor unwilling or incapable of doing this needs to be thrown out on their ass.
Count the number of lies the CEO of Virgin Hyperloop tells in this video
My brain broke at "on demand" and "high capacity" and "flexible the way you want to live your lives" and I puked at "first new transportation technology in 100 years"
Just in case you hadn't heard, housing policy is climate policy. But it's not enough to change land use patterns to reduce pollution from cars. We're going to have to re-build a whole bunch of civilization away from climate impacts.
We've all been in those climate meetings (I'm thinking late 2000's in particular) where someone brings up need to integrate "adaptation," and is immediately shushed by VSPs and funders.
The time for shushing is long gone. We have to adapt. We can't live the way same anymore.
What does adaptation look like? Well, in immediate, it looks like ... losing entire communities to fire/flood, then kluging together a place for displaced people to live.
But *planning* doesn't wait for catastrophe. Changes to built environments take *lots of time and money.*
everything the car industry has ever said about itself has always been a lie and using the passive voice to hide the fact that you fell for it *again* is the real story here
- cars can mix with pedestrians, horses, streetcars, and bicycles: lie
- drunk driving is safe: lie
- humans and bicycles don’t belong on the street: lie

- seatbelts don’t save lives: lie
- it’s not our fault cars explode: lie
- speeding is safe: lie
- cars are more affordable than trains: lie
- highways pay for themselves: lie
- everyone can afford a car: lie
- this car makes women/men/non-binary humans attracted to you: lie
- you need a bigger car to be safe out there: lie
We’ve never been a democracy. And I’m not talking about “direct” democracy, I’m just talking about proportional representation.
We have a Senate. That’s all you need to know about American governance, because the mere existence of the Senate explains almost everything.
It explains why lefties get so bent out of shape about “mod Dems” and “centrists” - because it’s true! A majority of Americans support progressive policy.
i made a funny blooper tweet last night, thankfully have friends like @IDoTheThinking & @daguilarcanabal to make fun of me when that happens but to reiterate:
No candidate for local office runs on NIMBYism, especially if they're a NIMBY. They run like YIMBYs.
There's a reason.
Poll after poll shows a supermajority of Californians are either natural YIMBYs, or YIMBY-adjacent. Californians of all backgrounds/income levels want more housing that lets them drive less.
The sad part: Like most Americans, most Californians are checked out of local politics.
So, every four years we go through this stupid exercise where SuperNIMBY city councilors like @SophieHahnBerk make these outrageously false claims about how much housing they supported, when anyone who's ever attended a city council meeting knows she's exactly the opposite.
