"Other countries have social safety nets. The U.S. has women."

I talked to @JessicaCalarco about her research on women & pandemic parenting/relationships — and the idea of sociology as "un-gaslighting"

annehelen.substack.com/p/other-countr…
"In the U.S., most of us aren’t taught to use our sociological imaginations. We’re not taught to think about social problems as structural problems."

annehelen.substack.com/p/other-countr…
"We’re not taught to see the forces that operate beyond our control – forces like capitalism, patriarchy, and white supremacy....Instead, we — esp. women & people from other systematically marginalized groups — are taught to self-help-book our way out of structural problems."
"Intensive work and intensive parenting norms are especially powerful because they serve the interests of powerful actors in our society, including corporations and (white) men."

One of the reasons I went full-time w/the newsletter = being able to do long, contextualized interviews like this, with non-celebrities, which just don't have much of a place in digital media. If you want more of this sort of thing, consider subscribing:

AND if you have ideas for academics, activists, thinkers, and weirdos I should interview in the future, please let me know! Email is in my bio.

This was in the NYT Live COVID Report yesterday: Across the upper Mountain West — Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming —  the pressing problem is staffing: "the going rate for an I.C.U. nurse in the region has doubled to $120 an hour, more than small hospitals can afford"
[one problem with the NYT Live Update blogs — for COVID, for Politics, whatever — is that there is no record of previous iterations of the story]

This piece is well-intentioned but I think the headline is misleading & bad. Everyone has different understandings of "safe"; should be "Experts say no need to cancel Thanksgiving, so long as you actually f-ing quarantine"

apnews.com/article/thanks…
I've had people tell me "they're being really really safe" and then tell me they just got back from a trip to Puerto Vallarta
"I'm being really really safe" and then that night I see an Instagram of them eating indoors with masks off

Here's some additional footage from the Graham, NC March to the Polls where police pepper sprayed multiple participants—including young children &, as seen here, members of the Voter Protection Legal Team. This was sent to me by a member of that team who was subsequently arrested
For more on what happened, here's a detailed local news story: newsobserver.com/news/local/art…
The person who was arrested is a volunteer for the Democratic Party, working as a Poll Observer for Legal Protection Team. And they were *arrested.* They can't speak further because they have a pending court case. This is voting in 2020.

This piece gets close to and then darts away from how militias et. al. will attempt to justify actions if Biden wins: they do not believe they are subject to the laws of the government, only their interpretation of the constitution

washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/…
I've heard this called the "Bundyification" of America and I think it's an apt description, but only if you understand the Bundy's actions as ruled by their very specific understanding of a divinely inspired constitution
You can't just say "these people are wackadoodles." There's an incredibly resilient world view & understanding of "liberty" at work. It can expand to include everything from BLM land to mask-wearing and vaccines. There is a real sense of righteousness & martrydom to defending it

All of the people I know who are handling COVID Month 8 (and the week before election) the best = people who are doing some sort of volunteer or mutual aid work.

I asked a bunch of them to tell me about their work & how it helps (themselves and others)

Prison Book Programs, Hyper-Local Radio Hosting in AK, Grant Writing, Coat Drives, Deep Canvassing, Lunch Making, Universal Preschool Initiative Advocating, Fruit Picking

These stories will absorb you & make you feel better & hopefully (!) look for opportunities where you are
"When I was in Brownies, we sang a song encouraging us to “pick a good turn to do each day.” This feels like a throwback to that, rather than the more resume-oriented volunteering I’ve gravitated towards as an adult."
