1/ Trump's claims of election fraud risk sparking political violence.
Case-in-point: Trump supporter was arrested on Tuesday after calling for crowds of New Yorkers to be gunned down in the streets while celebrating the election results gothamist.com/news/feds-heav…
2/ Brian Maiorana was arrested in Annadale, Staten Island on Tuesday morning. Federal agents who searched his home recovered:
- a semiautomatic pistol
- the upper portion of an AR 15 assault rifle
- several rounds of ammunition
3/ In a November 5th message, Maiorana allegedly posted: “The carnage needs to come in the form of extermination of anyone that claims to be democrat…as well as their family members.”
Three days later, he allegedly suggested "we blow up the FBI building for real"
4/ "The results of a search warrant this morning revealed that this was not simply idle chatter...The defendant appears to have taken steps to acquire weapons that would make it possible for him to carry out what he stated in these violent messages."
5/ Trump's habit of stoking unfounded conspiracy theories and dehumanizing your political opponents is INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS b/c it has the effect of inspiring some individuals to commit violence.
It's particularly dangerous in a country where guns are INCREDIBLY EASY TO GET
6/ It's not like Trump and his supporters in the GOP don't know their rhetoric could lead to real-world violence. They know...
Exhibit 1: the would-be kidnappers in the Whitmer case
Exhibit 2: at least 87 ppl have been killed by armed extremists inspired by Trump:
7/ So how can one assume that sparking political violence and causing chaos is NOT part of the goal?
“the disinformation coming from the president and his surrogates about ballot fraud is fueling far-right groups in ways that present threats to public safety,” Mary McCord, DOJ's former top national security official huffpost.com/entry/trump-vo…
@ryanjreilly 9/ “You have the president of the United States taking these people to the edge, and the second that something happens he’s going to turn around and go, ‘Well, I didn’t tell them to do that.’” -- Bill Fulton, expert on right-wing domestic terrorism
@ryanjreilly 10/ “A lot of these guys think that they’re like defending the United States. They think they’re patriots. That is powerful. Patriots go to war for their country all the time... When you start mixing that, you end up with really, really bad shit happening” huffpost.com/entry/trump-vo…

1/ @JoeBiden & @KamalaHarris received the most votes cast for a presidential ticket in U.S. history.
THREAD on why they have a decisive mandate to tackle our nation’s gun violence crisis & build safer American communities with fewer gun injuries and deaths
@JoeBiden@KamalaHarris 2/ Biden & Harris, ran on one of the most ambitious and comprehensive gun reform agendas in history.
They'll take office in the midst of a surge in gun sales & increases in gun deaths and injuries
Suicides, homicides, unintentional shootings, and mass shootings are on the rise
@JoeBiden@KamalaHarris 3/ According to data from @GunDeaths, childhood deaths alone have increased by 42% this year compared to 2019; teenage deaths are up by 37%
1/ Seeing reports this morning that Trump is planning to "hold rallies focused on the litigation, and brandish obituaries of people who were recorded as voting but are dead" as advisers don't want to tell him that the race is over
2/ Going along with Trump's delusion about election fraud is incredibly anti-democratic and a huge disservice to the country and our people -- particularly as Biden works to unite us and tackle COVID and the winter surge. Lives are literally on the line
3/ Even Republican leaders who DID recognize President-Elect Biden included language in their releases or statements about Trump's right to contest in court -- even though he's managed to produce zero evidence of fraud.
1/ Trump's extraordinary efforts to suppress the vote are part of his re-election strategy -- and they're absolutely maddening.
In Philly Trump campaign is videotaping voters as they return ballots
In NV, Trump is suing to force officials to more rigorously examine ballot
2/ In Ohio, Trump sued to prevent expanded use of ballot drop boxes
In NH, Trump sought to shoot down an attempt to expand absentee ballot access
In AZ, tried to prevent allowing ballots received from reservations after Election Day because of mail delays
3/ "Never before in modern presidential politics has a candidate been so reliant on wide-scale efforts to depress the vote as Trump." politico.com/news/2020/10/2…
1/ Today is the 2-year-anniversary of the anti-semitic shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Squirrel Hill, PA.
This was the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the United States. The shooter killed 11 and wounded 6.
2/ Before the shooting, the shooter was spewing his anger on a right-wing social media platform, calling immigrants “invaders,” distributing racist memes and asserting that Jews were the “enemy of white people.”
3/ The shooter's anti-Semitic venom represents a growing trend of anti-Semitism
In 2019, 2,107 anti-Semitic incidents were reported in the US more than in any year since the @ADL began tracking 40 yrs ago
FBI says the number of such incidents rose 29% in 2018 from 2015
