#PayaShraddha is Odisha’s annual ritual of paying respect and bidding farewell to all the ancestors’ who are believed to have come down to earth on Mahalaya during #PitruPakhya and go back to their heavenly abode on the day of #Dipabali amidst the lights.
Peoples’ believe that by giving this shradha, salvation is given to the ancestors of paternal clan with maternal clan. That’s why all say “ଝିଅର ପୁଅ ନାତି, ସେ ସରଗେ ଜାଳିବ ବତୀ”.
By doing so, the pleasing posterity is blessed by the pleased ancestors & their blessings on the occasion+
pave our path to Paradise.
The elder male member of the family holds a bundle of (crossed shaped) lighted kaunria kathis and pointing it towards the sky bade adieu to the forefathers reciting
“ବଡ଼ବଡଡୁଆ ହୋ,
ଅନ୍ଧାରରେ ଆସି ଆଲୁଅରେ ଯାଅ।
ଶ୍ରୀକ୍ଷେତ୍ର ଯାଇ
ବାଇଶିପାହାଚେ ଅଭଡ଼ା ଖାଇ,
ଗଡଗଡଉଥାଅ।”
Paya shraddha is not now observed in its earlier forms. It is symbolically observed in some[] homes by lighting kaunria kathis.
The concept of shradha was conceived by Rushi Atri. He narrated the rituals to his grandson Nimi that established the rituals that are practiced today.
