Otto von Scheyern was born around 1117 to Otto von Scheyern, Count Palatine of Bavaria and his wife, Heilika.

When Otto succeeded his father as Count Palatine in 1157, Bavaria was ruled by Heinrich der Löwe, whose cousin, Friedrich von Staufen, was the Emperor. Otto's loyalty would be brought in question when Heinrich rebelled against his cousin. 2/10
Bavaria was one of the oldest duchies in the region, dating back to 6th century AD, when Garibald and Tassilo ruled as Dukes under Frankish suzerainty, till it was annexed by Charlemage in 788. His grandson Louis the German would initially rule Bavaria as King. 3/10
The Bavaria Heinrich der Löwe was assigned was a much smaller one than the one ruled by Louis the German. The East Mark (Österreich) had already been carved out as a separate state, a state that would become Austria. 4/10
As Heinrich continued his rebellion, the Emperor would eventually replace him with a suitable trustworthy ally - Otto von Scheyern. The duchy Otto would receive would be again a smaller one, with the lose of Styria as an independent state within the Empire. 5/10
But Otto's rule would be short lived as he would die three years later in 1183. Fortunately for his son Ludwig, he would be able to retain his father's domain with the support of his uncle, Konard von Wittelsbach, who was the Archbishop of Mainz. 6/10
When Count Palatine of the Rhine (Lorraine) Heinrich (also a grandson of Heinrich der Löwe) died without heir in 1214, Ludwig would be given the title. Otto's family, the House of Wittelsbach, would retain both domains till 1918. 7/10
When the Holy Roman Empire was abolished in 1806, Maximilian Joseph of the Wittelsbach house would become King of Bavaria. The family would retain the title till 1918, when the German Empire was abolished. 8/10
While the enduring legacy of Otto von Scheyern will be in Bavaria, there was few countries that saw a Wittelsbach ruler briefly. When Greece became independent from the Ottomans, it was Wittelsbach prince, Otto, who would be elected to rule. His rule though would not last. 9/10
They would briefly rule Germany and the Holy Roman Empire as well, but the main non German rule by the Wittelsbach would happen in Sweden where they ruled close to 70 years. 10/10
