Flemington Racecourse (FR) station opened 1861 by Melbourne and Essendon Railway Company. Closed 1864, reopened in 1867 by VR. The FR line electrified 1918 for testing of electric trains, the first line to be sparked.

Broadmeadows opened 1872 as part of the North East line. A line connecting Broadmeadows to Albion open 1929 for freight to by pass via Essendon line.
Essendon - Broadmeadows electrified 1921.
Broadmeadows - Craigieburn electrified 2007.

The line from Broadmeadows to Albion as opened was two broad gauge tracks, in 1962 the track on the eastern side was converted to standard gauge.

South Yarra railway station opened Dec 1860 by the Melbourne and Suburban Railway Company, as "Gardiner's Creek Road". Renamed South Yarra Jan 1867. South Yarra became part of the VR network in 1878.
