Confirmed. Apples new processor destroys my macbook pro 16" with an 8 core I9 with geekbench. Impressive considering this laptop is apples new entry level machine. Let's see if it does standard things like running the software I use daily. #AppleM1#AppleSilicon
Considering this is day 1 of these machines being in the wild, I am expecting some software not to work great until developers get their universal binary versions out. This isn't my main work machine, but a test machine for the moment.
First test. Dropbox. Need to use a beta build for the moment that works with Rosetta. So this is an intel build that should run on the M1. I guess the universal binary version will come soon. This is the install I am most nervous amout.
This version of dropbox runs under rosetta intel emulation and it seems to be running fine. It is merrily chugging away syncing my files.
Next test, while dropbox chugs away, is installing an iPad app. My son keeps on asking me to play "Among Us", so let's see how the iPad version runs on a mac :-)
Well, the M1 runs ipad apps just fine. I have no idea what I am doing on the game. My son can teach me later, but it runs just fine. Even the cheap in-app purchase to remove ads
Next task is installing MS Office Suite. This isn't universal binary yet, so will be going through Rosetta. Downloading now. Fingers Crossed. #Apple#AppleSilicon#AppleM1
While I wait for Office to download, I want to tr Scrivener, as this is my main writing tool for my book. The App Store version hasn't been updated yet, but they have a download version on the developer's site they recommend using in the meantime. Seems to work fine.
The PDF export of the formatted book was lightning fast!! I re-backed up the project to a USB stick first. Not that I am paranoid or anything ;-)
MS Office runs well. It is a Rosetta emulated application, so not universal binary yet. The first run takes about 20 seconds while it converts, but after that is loads instantly. Needs more testing on day to day work, but first impressions are good.
Time for a battery test of the M1 powered MacBook Air. I am at 100%, it is 12.27pm. Going to use it all afternoon installing apps and playing about, let's see how long it can go for.
Found the first application that doesn't yet work on the M1 powered Mac, and that is ScreenFlow 9. It loads but when you go to record the screen, it just goes weird and then locks the screen. Hopefully @Telestream has an update ready soon.
Right, going to try Visual Studio for Mac and .NET Core 5 on the M1 Mac. It will most likely be run through rosetta (I think), I have no idea what will happen. Let's try it :-)
Just installed Ableton Live 10 Suite on the M1 MacBook Air. I honestly wasn't expecting it to work because audio software normally doesn't work straight away on OS upgrades, but it seems to run perfectly fine. :-)
