Thread 🧵

The first case of COVID-19 can be traced to November 17 — I see people calling today COVID-19’s birthday. More accurately stated, this is COVID-19’s spillover birthday, the day the virus made the jump to humans. 1/
The CDC estimates that ¾ of new human diseases originate in animals. It is our destruction of the natural world and our abuse of animals that is accelerating the frequency of these spillover events, where pathogens make the jump from animals to humans. 2/
As humanity throws off the balance of natural ecosystems with habitat destruction, pollution, ocean acidification, climate change, loss of biodiversity and species extinction, we are increasing the frequency where viruses... 3/
... are either making the jump directly from wild species to humans or wild species are interacting with livestock and then making the jump to humans through our consumption of livestock. 4/
If you were to look at the weight of land mammals on Earth, 32% are human, 67% are livestock or domesticated pets, and just 1% are wild animals. 1%! When we steal all the natural resources for our needs & destroy the natural world, we throw off the balance of the ecosystem. 5/
A healthy ecosystem is one filled with biodiversity. If we continue on the path we are on, we will drive many of the species on this planet to extinction and eventually, we will destroy ourselves. 6/
If these subjects interest you, @OP_Society made a documentary about the sixth mass extinction of species called #RacingExtinction. It is heartbreaking and hopeful, and offers ideas for solutions. I hope you will take the time to watch it. Fin.
P.S. In case I wasn’t clear: As we destroy natural habitats, wild species are forced to either live in close proximity to humans, or, close proximity to livestock – or both.  This increases the number of opportunities for spillover events, where viruses make the jump into humans.

1/ I have lived on this blue orb for 16,719 days now. I am thankful for every moment I have had and every moment I still have left on this beautiful pale blue dot we call home, floating in space in the outskirts of the Milky Way galaxy. 💫
2/ I am going to use my remaining days spending more time listening to the conversations of trees, swimming in the sea among the last of our coral reefs, the tiny nudibranchs with every color you could ever imagine, other worlds among us, entire rainforests under the sea.
3/ I will find a path to dark skies and reacquaint myself with the constellations I learned as a child, play music, dance, sing, read books, jump off cliffs and out of airplanes, stand once again in the shadow of the moon under the total solar eclipse, see the pyramids...

1. (Thread) Someone commented under my 100,000 mile @Tesla post with “Yet you drove in a sport that uses gasoline #irony” and I felt compelled to respond that I am thankful for my racing career and I will tell you why:
2. My race program allowed me to protect over 1500 acres of rainforest, give away 30,000 vegan cheeseburgers, 1000 DVD copies of The Cove at Daytona, hundreds of Blackfish DVDs at Talladega, show my electric car and...
3. my portable solar system trackside to tens of thousands of race fans, work with veterans on Capitol Hill who are fighting for clean energy - all while promoting things I care about: renewable energy, veganism, documentaries spreading awareness, and energy independence.

1/ Humans are the most dangerous animal on Earth. We represent just 0.01% of all living things and yet in our short time here we have already had a catastrophic effect on the natural world: we have destroyed 83% of all wild mammals and 50% of all plants.
2/ Of all mammals on Earth, 60% are now livestock, 36% are humans, and just 4% are wild animals. Farmed poultry makes up 70% of all birds on the planet, with just 30% being wild. How sad is it that most of the birds on Earth are not able to fly. That’s what wings are for.
3/ We are adding 1 billion people to our planet every 12 years and for every billion people comes 10 billion farm animals at our current rate of meat consumption. This is not sustainable.
