LIVE: Trump's new Acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller in the Pentagon briefing room announcing changes to counterterrorism operations defense.gov/Watch/Live-Eve…
BREAKING: Pentagon announces it will carry out Trump order that by Jan 15, 2021, US force sizes in Afghanistan and Iraq will be 2,500 each, announces Acting SecDef Chris Miller. Claims not a change in policy.
Miller says this morning he met with/called key leaders in Congress and allies, incl NATO's Stoltenberg and Afghan Pres Ghani.
Once upon a time Senate Republicans lost their damn minds if Obama HINTED at reducing forces based on a political timeline instead of actual security conditions on the ground.
Once upon a time before Trump...
"Today is... a result of President Trump's bold leadership" says Miller.
Acting SecDef Miller reads his statement and then swiftly walks -- almost runs -- away from the Pentagon press corps.
JUST STUNNING. Acting SecDef Miller said:
- No case why this drawdown is justified now
- No case how this improves US security
- No evidence that threats from Afghanistan and Iraq have changed or lessened
- No mission given for the remaining 2,500 troops
- Which units
- Timetable
Inhofe issues baldly double-sided statement: "we must ensure that our strategy and posture reflect the conditions on the ground"... but Trump's "military strategy has always reflected conditions on the ground, rather than being tied to an arbitrary calendar like his predecessor."

BREAKING: In memo obtained by @DefenseOne, Acting SecDef names controversial Trump favorite Anthony Tata -- who has a history of advancing conspiracy theories and making anti-Muslim remarks, including toward President Obama -- to fill the top Pentagon policy post.
In less 24 hours after Mark Esper was fired, two men Trump wanted that the GOP Senate likely never would have confirmed for their jobs are in control at the Pentagon. Even if just for 71 days... defenseone.com/ideas/2020/11/…
Here’s what G Washington warned about partisan lies:
“You cannot shield yourselves too much against the jealousies and heartburnings which spring from these misrepresentations; they tend to render alien to each other those who ought to be bound together by fraternal affection.”
Here’s what GW warned about lying party leaders: “They serve to organize faction, to give it an artificial and extraordinary force; to put, in the place of the delegated will of the nation the will of a party, often a small but artful and enterprising minority of the community”
In other words, a few bad apples will try to supplant the will of the people with their own. If Americans let them, Washington says, “cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government.”
My brother’s mother-in-law has had COVID for two weeks. Yesterday, she was admitted with pneumonia in both lungs. No ventilator yet. Hopeful, but man. Her granddaughter, my niece is a nurse who this summer already survived a bout that hit the hospice where she works. #MaskUp 😷
She writes from the ER today: “Bob (her husband, also positive) and I have been diligent about wearing our masks, and using hand sanitizer. ...We followed all of the rules, but must have come in contact with a surface somewhere along our scenic walks..... we’ll never know.”
“Last night, as I turned on the news, there was Trump, riding around Washington and waving like he was the parade Marshall, while downplaying Covid. All of this is so disrespectful to those who are suffering or have lost loved ones! I just don’t get it!!!”
