Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans for the 2021 Carnival season have been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the city announced today.

1/6
According to the Johns Hopkins coronavirus tracker, Louisiana has recorded more than 207,000 COVID-19 cases and 6,156 deaths as of November 17.

2/6
Carnival season kicks off on January 6 and continues on until Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday. The holiday season is traditionally celebrated with parades and parties.

3/6
'With COVID-19 cases increasing around the country, we will have to modify how to observe carnival season to be safe for everyone,' says the New Orleans mayor’s office on its website.
4/6
The office added, 'We have done an amazing job flattening the curve – and hopefully it will stay that way through the winter – but we are surrounded by hot spots and we don’t know what the future holds in store for us.'

5/6
The city of New Orleans is asking the public for ideas on how to celebrate Carnival 2021 safely. The city’s public safety and public health teams will review the ideas, which are to be submitted by December 5, and will then provide recommendations.

Days later, on November 17, President Trump fired the head of the agency, Chris Krebs, via tweet.

‘Honored to serve,’ Krebs tweeted less than an hour after the president’s tweet. ‘We did it right. Defend Today, Secure Tomorrow. #Protect2020.'
Krebs, who was widely respected on both sides of the aisle for his work on election security, frequently used his Twitter account to fact-check false claims about voting in the 2020 election.
