Ok so along with my good friend @mahler3 I’m rewatching Contagion ... so prepare for some live tweeting. For those who want to follow along it’s on HBO
There are so many great subtle touches in this film about how the virus is spread ... the bowl of nuts for example that Paltrow is eating out of in the hotel bar
Feels a bit too spot on
I’d forgotten there’s a subtle dig on the Lions at the CDC headquarters. Tough but fair
Is Jude Law ... Donald Trump or Alex Berenson? I say the latter
The moment where the sick kid touches the door handle, leaving the virus behind, is completely harrowing especially when you think about where we were in the beginning of this pandemic and afraid to touch anything
On an unrelated note Kate Winslet should be in every movie. There should just be a Kate Winslet network.
Oh god I remember back in March when everyone was saying don’t touch your face ... and Kate Winslet just used that line about how everyone touches their face thousands of times a day. I had forgotten how focused I was on touching my face
Everyone is in this movie. Even Bryan Cranston gets a tiny role
The way this movie starts out with the schools closing and people being told to stay home if they feel sick ... just too close to home
The phenomenon of a public official giving a coherent public presentation about a pandemic ... is weird to see
Forsythia in Contagion is ... hydroxychloroquine in 2020
My mother weighs in
And Kate Winslet getting sick is every health care worker getting sick with COVID ... this movie was so insanely spot on even if the nature of the virus is completely different
And Matt Damon not being allowed to bury his wife and son ...
The kidnapping of Marion Cotillard is probably the only thing in this movie that doesn’t completely work. It feels a bit out of place with the rest of the movie
“Congress is figuring out how to work online” ... so the movie didn’t get everything right
The shots of people in supermarkets stocking up on food ... Of course the roadblocks and shutdowns didn’t happen because we don’t live in a country that prone to organization
Interestingly the movie makes a big point about Americans resorting to violence to get supplies. Thankfully that didn’t happen around COVID
Even when she’s being buried in a mass grave, Kate Winslet remains as fetching as ever
Sanjay Gupta is in Contagion!!!
Yup they run out of PPE and body bags
The shots of empty offices, gyms, theaters and airports ... again, completely spot on.
One obvious difference between this movie and COVID, thankfully, is the mortality rate in Contagion is 25 percent.
In the movie, there’s basically a societal breakdown, which clearly didn’t happen in the US.

Of course, if we had a mortality rate of 25-30% things might have been different ...
I wonder if we’ll see vaccination centers like those in the film?
U2’s. “All I Want Is You” is a beautiful song ... and it’s a lovely way to end the film before the big reveal
Really a fantastic movie. The pandemics are different in many ways and so too are the reactions to it, but Contagion got so many of the smaller parts about what it would be like to live through a pandemic

As bad as that Trump statement was, keep in mind that close to 70 million Americans voted for four more years of it
You want to talk about the divide in America? On any every news network, even Fox, pundits and analysts will eviscerate Trump for what he just said. Tens of millions of Americans who voted for him thought it was great.
I said earlier that the issue raised by this election is not that Democrats have a bad message or can't communicate with voters ... it's that tens of millions of voters are ok, even applauding, of the president's lying, corruption, and bats**t insanity. How do you fix that?

I've seen a lot of folks praising Stacey Abrams for everything she did to help Democrats win in Georgia. Oddly, I don't see her name on the ballot in either of the state's two Senate races.
In case there's some confusion about what this means, Abrams sat out the Georgia Senate race because she wanted to be Biden's VP. She actively lobbied for it. Had she run for Senate it's not hard to imagine that Democrats would have done better than they did.
And yes I know the argument that Abrams didn't want to run for senate. I'm pretty sure Hickenlooper and Bullock didn't want to run either. But they gave Dems the best chance they had of picking up Senate seats. The same is true of Abrams in Georgia.

So I've seen some people argue that one of the takeaways from the 2020 results is that America is a center-right country ... let's take a look at the numbers THREAD
Since 1988, Democrats have won the popular vote in 7 of the last 8 POTUS elections

Republicans have won more than 47.9 percent of the popular vote one time (50.7 in 2004)

Democrats have won more than 47.9 percent of the vote in every single election, except 1992
Democrats have won more than 50 percent of the vote in presidential elections three times.

Republicans have won the presidency while losing the popular vote twice (2000 and 2016). Assuming Trump loses, two Republican incumbents will have lost their bids for reelection

If I ever write a book on the 2020 election this will definitely be the cover photo
The shirt is obviously a classic. What puts it into the pantheon are the camo cargo shorts
Also “Beer, BBQ, Freedom” is the name of my Lee Greenwood cover band

I've been working on a piece charting the worst indiscretions of Trump's presidency and I'd completely forgotten about the speech he gave to the Boy Scouts Jamboree in which he talked about a friend who had orgies on a boat nymag.com/intelligencer/…
Or the time he pushed the Prime Minister of Montenegro out of his way for a photo op
Or that time he cancelled a summit with the Danish prime minister because she wouldn't sell him Greenland

If people want to drive sober they are free to do so.

Those who want to drive drunk shouldn't be shamed and government should not outlaw it.

We need to respect each other's decisions.
If folks don't want to get an abortion, they are free to do so.

Those who want to get an abortion shouldn’t be shamed about it, and government should not outlaw it.

We need to respect each other’s decisions.
If folks don't want to drive 125 mph, they are free to do so.

Those who do want to drive 125 mph shouldn’t be shamed about it, and government should not mandate speed limits.

We need to respect each other’s decisions.
