4.5 years ago my life completely changed. I needed to make the jump onto a show in order to write tv. I interviewed for the PA job and didn’t get it, but was asked if I wanted to be considered for the Showrunner’s Assistant gig if the current Showrunner’s pilot got a pick up.
I interviewed with @andrewdabb who absolutely does not remember this. I barely remember it if only bc something happened on The 100 and we talked about it. He seemed decent. I wanted the job but was very sure he did not care abt an assistant.
Frequency got picked up. I got the call. And I started work in May 2016 on Supernatural. It was my first show. There was barely any training time before diving in head first and figuring it out on the fly. Yet @andrewdabb was the most gracious boss I’ve ever had.
Bossman was so gracious that I was actually worried he wasn’t telling me what I was doing wrong so I scheduled a 90 day evaluation for myself. I told him it was happening. Most bosses would roll their eyes, but Andrew took it in stride and gave me honest answers.
Andrew has always been someone who wants to train people up. He wants people to succeed. In an industry full of people who want to be the most important person in the room, Andrew has never ever had it in him to keep people down and provided opportunities for everyone to learn.
I learned so much from @andrewdabb. When it comes to writing, there’s no one on SPN who was more consistent than him. When reading through the scripts, his was the first voice I could recognized from reading just one page (after Kripke).
But in life and in business... no one has more patience. There were moments I would get so mad at the audacity that someone would say xyz — but Andrew would sit, listen fully, and then pitch a fix that would make everyone happy. Because he listened and cared. A rare combination.
Proud to have been your assistant, @andrewdabb. Thanks for always being willing to sit in the chair outside your office and talk business with me, for not getting mad when I yelled at you, and for reading my writing. You’ve done great things, but the best are yet to come.
