Re: the #COVIDZero Canada strategy, "Test, Trace, Isolate, Support" @COVIDzeroCanada
...here is my take on how we can get there (thread):
/1
Test: Widely available, accessible testing; rapid resulting (rapid resulting...if #YYC airport can do this for travellers, why is this not available to the masses yet???) /2
Test: What about test-at-home kits? The FDA recently approved an at-home test that provides results within 30 mins: fda.gov/news-events/pr…
/3
Test: Asymptomatic testing needs to be part of our strategy. Likely a lot of asymptomatic &/or pre-symptomatic spread occurring.
"If you just test people who are symptomatic, you're going to miss a very large contingent of the spread.." ~Dr A Fauci cbc.ca/news/health/fa…
/4
Trace:
Alberta’s contact tracing system has completely fallen apart; >85% of new cases are unable to be traced --- this makes it difficult to implement ‘targeted’ restrictions (ie., how do we know if we are ‘targeting’ the right things???)
/6
Isolate:
- This is where SUPPORT is essential
- Need to support people who have challenges with isolation (multiple families living in same household, people who are homeless, residents of LTC, people who are incarcerated, to name a few).
/7
Isolate: How can we make it easier for people to isolate? NYC has ‘Take Care’ packages for those w COVID19: includes PPE for household of 3 to quarantine for 10-14 days, thermometer, 2 at home testing kits for contacts, & a pulse oximeter to monitor O2 nychealthandhospitals.org/test-and-trace…
/8
Support:
- Increase mental health supports
- Support for healthcare workers
- Find innovative ways to ensure visitor restrictions are kept to a minimum
/9
Support:
-Financial support for individuals, families, businesses, those impacted by pandemic restrictions
-Grassroots support: shop local, order takeout from local restaurants
- Support neighbors, family, friends if they are required to isolate
/10
I would add to the strategy: 'Equity'.
Much of the above relies on a significant amount of privilege. We need to get creative & find ways to support people without access to phones/computers, people who do not have homes, those residing in rural/remote parts of Canada, etc.
/12
I know that I've only just scratched the surface. But I've heard many people ask how we could ever get to #COVIDZero. It's a lofty goal but we are Canadians & we are strong, compassionate, supportive, & innovative.
We can do this.
