Covid-19 pandemic has put things into perspective. We have a disease we do not currently have a cure for. The same could be extended to AMR, a silent killer. Public health response needs to continue for AMR. #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
One could also say that AMR does not have a voice, unlike Covid-19. In case of AMR, the enemy is not seen. People are not as aware. Could be compared to NCDs- high burden but lesser attention. #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
There have been reports of covid patients being unknowingly treated with antibiotics. Lack of a definitive line of therapy could have caused this. But are we fueling one fire in the process of curbing another? #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
Until we have more evidence based data, it is difficult to comment on the use of antibiotics of Covid-19. This could be worrisome given we are fighting a new virus. Vigilance is key. #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
There is emerging data on tuberculosis concerns in the wake of the pandemic. This could contribute to a rise in TB infections and is a worrisome trend that needs to be controlled. Telemedicine shows promise. #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
We have people dying of preventable infections as well as due to antibiotic resistance. Dispensing antibiotics without a prescription is unethical. Such uncontrolled access needs to be controlled. #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
The industry needs to follow up on drugs they manufacture and sell. The gov needs to deter people from reckless access to drugs through regulations. And the attitude of consumers needs a significant change! #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
How do we ensure antibiotics are not seen as villains instead of the lifesavers they are? It is a multi-faceted issue involving various stakeholders. A holistic understanding and better communication is needed. #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
Unless we start addressing each stage and the role of each stakeholder, we cannot solve the problem. The population landscape and health seeking behavior requires in-depth understanding to identify patterns. #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
Communication strategies for awareness will succeed only once we get to the root of the issue. What makes the consumer look for antibiotics? What are the dynamics with local providers? This warrants attention! #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
Antibiotics are being recklessly used on crops and in farm animals. The need of the hour is acknowledging that AMR is a threat, along with participation by everyone involved. Short term incentives are needed! #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
Participation from civil society is warranted. We need to communicate with farmers & people in communities. There are issues related to policy, implementation and compliance. Collective engagement is important. #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
How do you communicate AMR in Hindi? How do you make people understand the importance of antibiotics, as well as the fact that if taken without prescription, the same is harmful. This is a substantial challenge. #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
We need to be careful about scientific messaging! Extensive focus on predictions related to AMR deaths could scare people further. Alerts are important but when done in a sensitive manner that appeals to people. #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
We are still at the level of awareness and there is so much to be done in terms of advocacy as well as action! We have a long way to go. More research is needed to see how people actually perceive the messaging. #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
We are not doing enough. We have great theories but in terms of practicality, we live in silos. Interconnectedness of sectors is essential. Sectoral gaps impede sustainable action! This problem affects everyone! #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
Interdisciplinary approaches are required. Various sectors have different roles to play. We have the knowledge. But effective communication needs tapping into. We can take lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic. #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
As individuals, we are responsible to generate awareness, talk to people around, and initiate a dialogue. Data may not be relatable but personal stories help connect and create a lasting impact on everyone! #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
There is a sense of urgency in the industry with regards to MDR-TB. There are challenges in terms of biology, duration of treatment & patient compliance. There is need for new drugs to shorten this treatment. #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
Meaningful data on the ground is required. There is anecdotal evidence which needs to be expanded to obtain substantial evidence that can be shared and acted upon. Small scientific studies need to be scaled up. #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
There is need for capacity building in the scientific community. Research needs to be communicated otherwise the understanding remains limited to the scientists. Health journalism needs to be promoted! #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance
All of us need to do our bit. Instead of stocking up on antibiotics, let us all get involved in spreading awareness and responsible messaging to engage the communities and tackle AMR. #AMR#WAAW2020#SaveAntimicrobials#StopSuperbugs 💊 @India_Alliance

Researchers all over the world are looking to identify alternative treatments to reduce antibiotics usage. One such approach taken by @KaushikLab is to evaluate traditional medicinal remedies using modern day scientific tests. bit.ly/2UT5NKs
In this study, they collaborated with an Ayurveda practitioner to identify remedies in ancient Indian texts for wound infections. They found 3 plant-based remedies used for wounds in ancient texts.
Using the plant parts and recipe described, they made these remedies & tested them with laboratory assays against two bacteria known to cause wound infections. They determined that the remedies inhibit bacterial growth to different extents, depending on the bacterial state.
