The last time parliament sat for a fortnight the Libs spent the weekend lying to journalists claiming Labor was going to block a wage subsidy. So I thought I’d get in early before they start the next set of lies about the sitting fortnight that starts on Monday.
#auspol
The wage subsidy lie was particularly odd given we had originally called for wage subsidies at the start of the pandemic and the Liberal Government described them as very dangerous.
What ended up happening was the government didn’t even list the wage subsidy for debate and Labor had to move to bring the debate on, otherwise it wouldn’t have happened.
As we go into the next fortnight the PM will have to participate by video link because he is isolating and we’ve agreed to that. So that’s locked in.
I’ve separately been arguing that every member of parliament should be allowed to vote. Because of social distancing this would mean expanding the defined area of the floor. Strangely we don’t have agreement from the government on that yet.
I’m not sure why the government thinks it’s controversial for democratically elected MPs to be allowed to vote. But, that’s where we are up to at the moment.
So the PM will definitely get to appear by video link but democratically elected MPs might be blocked from voting.
So they may well claim that we would breach social distancing rules by insisting everyone entitled to a vote is allowed to vote. If they claim this, it would be, you guessed it: another lie. Here’s why 👇🏼
The way we’ve been observing social distancing in the chamber is by expanding the definition of what constitutes the “floor” of the parliament.
If you look at the standing orders (which the government rarely does) you’ll see a map of the seats of the chamber. We’ve added extra floor space for extra seats so everyone can sit further apart. We haven’t amended the standing orders. It’s been common sense during a pandemic.
We have flagged with the government every member who has been constitutionally elected should be allowed to vote. All we have to do is keep expanding what we consider to be the floor of the chamber.
I’ll safely predict the government is trying to convince some journalists that demanding something as radical as democracy means an end to social distancing.
It doesn’t. It’s a lie.
Every MP who has been elected should be allowed to turn up and vote. We’ve co-operated to make sure the PM gets to appear by video link. It will be the height of arrogance if the government tries to stop elected MPs from voting.
And just to be painstakingly clear: this can be easily done by allowing extra places for MPs to vote and still observe social distancing.

We’ve just found out why no one even knows whether they are even eligible for the so-called support package for arts and entertainment workers. The guidelines brief is still sitting on the Minister’s desk waiting for his signature.
A thread 👇🏼
This is a sector that was almost completely shut down by Government decisions in March. But for three months they insisted the sector - which employs hundreds of thousands of people - was getting enough support and didn’t need a rescue package.
That eventually became untenable. So after more than 100 days of dithering they finally announced a $250m support package on June 25.

Yesterday Christian Porter brought in new regs which mean a lot of the rights workers give up during this crisis will be permanently lost. He claims the change is time limited. The period where the employer can ask you is limited. But the loss of rights if you agree is permanent.
So normally an enterprise agreement can only be varied if the employer gives you seven days notice. This gives you time to seek advice from your union, a lawyer, consultant and other work colleagues. Yesterday he reduced the time from 7 days to one.
That means the employer can advise you of the change one day and then have the workplace vote on it the following day. And the vote can be by show of hands, it doesn’t have to be secret ballot.

Porter’s claims that Labor is opposed to the Job Keeper package is unhinged. We called for it for weeks while gov ruled it out. He’s now claiming we will vote against amendments that haven’t even been drafted yet. It’s hysterical, stupid, nonsense. #auspol @SkyNewsAust @abcnews
So late last night we receive draft legislation and the section amending the Fair Work Act is left blank. Then Christian Porter goes into the media today claiming Labor has made a decision on words that haven’t been written.
This is the second day in a row where Christian Porter’s behaviour has been appalling. Yesterday he claimed unions were supportive of the wage subsidy being used to run down leave because of an application in the FW Commission that started before the wage subsidy was announced.

I don’t often promote media releases which are getting stuck into me but I’m about to. First I’ll show you the release from David Littleproud describing today’s Murray Darling announcement as a “hoax”. Then I’ll explain why his claim is entirely wrong.
#auspol #mdbplan
First, here’s Minister Littleproud’s attempt to be mean. It isn’t really particularly mean. It’s more just wrong. Anyway here’s the release.
Next, here’s the announcement he’s referring to. In particular he’s taking issue with the part where Labor commits to returning to the original definition of socio economic in the plan.
