On this day in 1944, US Army Pvt. Macario Garcia, a Mexican national who lived in Texas and was drafted into the Army in '42, performed acts of heroism that earned him the Medal of Honor.
2/ In Germany, as acting squad leader of Company B, 22d Infantry, Garcia "singlehandedly assaulted two enemy machine-gun emplacements," per his MOH citation. His company "was pinned down by intense machine-gun fire and subjected to a concentrated artillery and mortar barrage."
3/ According to his biographers Robert and Katherine Bailey, even though Garcia had been shot, "This was the day the fate of his brothers fell on his shoulders. He summoned all his resolve and strength and managed to crawl into the underbrush, while the German machine gunner...
4/"...and riflemen tried to finish him off. He sortied up the hill and through the woods, captured two Germans and took them down the hill. He then went back up after the machine gun. As he proceeded, he faced off with a German rifleman....
5/"...Although hit in the arm during the exchange, Macario delivered the lethal shot. He then killed the two Germans manning the machine gun in the fortified bunker with two shots of his M-1 and killed three more trying to escape...
6/"... He tossed in a grenade to be certain the gunners were dead. Inside the bunker he opened their blue tunics and saw their shrapnel riddled bodies; his nostrils filled with acrid burnt gun powder, and he became nauseated; yet,
he felt elated about completing the mission....
7/"...He broke the machine gun, striking it against a tree."
Per MOH citation: "Although painfully wounded, he refused to be evacuated and on his own initiative crawled forward alone until he reached a position near an enemy emplacement. Hurling grenades, he boldly assaulted...
8/"...the position, destroyed the gun, and with his rifle killed three of the enemy who attempted to escape. When he rejoined his company, a second machine gun opened fire and again the intrepid soldier went forward, utterly disregarding his own safety. He stormed the position...
9/"...and destroyed the gun, killed three more Germans, and captured four prisoners. He fought on with his unit until the objective was taken and only then did he permit himself to be removed for medical care."
10/ President Harry Truman awarded Pvt. Garcia the Medal of Honor on August 23, 1945.
"I would rather have a Medal of Honor than be President of the United States," Truman told him.
11/ But that's not where Garcia's story ends, because when he returned to Texas he continued to endure bigotry. He was infamously denied service at a restaurant. "I've been fighting for people like you, and now you mistreat me," he reportedly said.
Let’s take a moment to acknowledge 4 Republican officials who despite pressure from the president and his party remained allegiant to facts and truth and democracy and integrity... and math :
2/ We can’t pretend we all haven’t watched the president and the RNC attempt to undermine the results of the election by overturning state election results by disenfranchising millions of voters, based on deranged conspiracy theories.
This happened.
It’s still happening!
3/ It sounds so far fetched — but it’s just factual!
And at the end of the day it came down to judges and election officials doing their jobs and sticking to facts while most GOP leaders kept silent.
But we shouldn’t take comfort in the fact the system worked.
Monday the Michigan Board of State Canvassers is supposed to certify the election results. The board has 2 Republicans and 2 Democrats.
@RepPaulMitchell, R-Michigan, says one of the Republicans has been planning for awhile to vote against certification. ...
2/ Mitchell says he spoke days ago with Norman Shinkle, one of the two GOP members of the Michigan Board of State Canvassers.
Shinkle indicated last week he would vote against certifying the election results, Mitchell says, until an investigation is completed...
3/ This is being done, Mitchell says, so as to push a delay *even though there is no evidence of fraud or malfeasance that would necessitate such a move.*
Depending on how the other GOP member of the board, Aaron Van Langevelde, votes, Mitchell tells CNN...
1/ This is being pointed out elsewhere on this website (originally at the pro-Trump Powerline) but just in case you’re missing it... I kindly direct you to this affidavit offered by Lin Wood who has been trying and failing to stop the GA certification
I have some great news about the @HomesForOurTrps auction that ended last night!
As you know, a bunch of us — this year George Clooney, @mindykaling, @Wynonna, and me — ask athletes and actors and more to contribute swag and set visits and lunches for auction. The money goes...
2/ ...to @HomesForOurTrps, a top-rated charity that builds specially-designed homes for severely injured veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan and their families.
Last year we raised $265k for the auction but this year because of the pandemic we set our goal lower — to $150K....
3/ We were worried because the items that usually go for the most $ tend to be participatory in nature: set visits or lunches or tickets to shows.
The COVID19 pandemic and economic crisis preclude those kind of items.
Esper wants the US to get out of Afghanistan to focus on China and Russia;
he doesn’t think Afghanistan is a vital national interest, though it cannot be allowed to become a haven for terrorists who want to attack the US
The Esper memo reflected the unanimous opinion of the chain of command -- Esper, US Central Command leader Marine Gen. Kenneth "Frank" McKenzie, and commander of NATO's mission in Afghanistan Gen. Austin Miller
