I’ve got some sad news. A friend of mine recently passed away. Some of you may know him as well, @vince_howlett
Vince asked me to announce his passing on Twitter, when the time came
1/12
I met Vince here on Twitter, and we used to DM frequently.
He told me if I didn’t hear from him for 1 month, to take to Twitter & tell our mutual followers that he was gone.
2/12
It’s been a month and a half since his last message. All of my messages to him since, remain unread. And he hasn’t tweeted in nearly 2 months.
Sadly, and reluctantly, I have to accept he is gone.
3/12
I got to know Vince through our online chats. He had a great sense of humour.
He also had lots of health problems, most stemmed from a motorcycle accident he had many years ago.
4/12
Vince was in a lot of physical pain, His life was not easy after his accident. He struggled with his need to take prescription opiates for his pain. He was addicted, but he very much preferred cannabis.
5/12
Vince loved Cali weed, he said it was the only thing clean enough for him to tolerate. Sometimes, he had trouble finding it. It gave him relief from his pain.
6/12
Vince only had the use of one arm, but that didn’t stop him from being able to roll a joint.
He wanted me to visit him, and get high with him, but because of the pandemic, I was unable. We never met.
7/12
Vince was in hospital a few months ago, discharged, but then readmitted in October. He suffered from sepsis, and was diagnosed with cancer, on top of his other health issues. He was given 6 months.
8/12
I asked Vince if there was someone who could alert me to his passing when the time came. He said he had no one.
That made me sad. But I promised him, I would tweet about his death.
9/12
This thread is to honour that promise, and to pay tribute to my friend.
No one should die alone. No one should be forgotten.
10/12
The last time I heard from Vince, was on the 10th of October, from his hospital bed. Here are our last messages:
11/12
Rest in peace, Vince. You will be missed, my friend.
Today marks the 4th anniversary of the publication of my book, “Personal Use”.
I wrote it while working for BBC News. Literally.
To mark the occasion, I am going to tweet out the story of how Personal Use came to be, all on the hashtag #PersonalUse
1/54
I explain the origin of my online identity in the book, but I will briefly summarise it here. I created the name northlondonhippy in 2004 to post on a forum about magic mushrooms. Then I used it for a blog. And I kept using it, and it stuck.
2/54
But I am going to skip ahead to the Summer of 2015. Some drastic changes were being brought into the newsroom & because I worked nights exclusively, I was going to catch the worst of it. For secret mental health reasons, I preferred nights.
