I covered the TWA 800 crash, 25 years ago.

I was in Atlanta for the 1996 Olympics, we had only just arrived, and the morning after the crash, I jumped on a couple of flights to Long Island.

1/19 I was working for APTV (now APTN) at the time, and I was sent to Atlanta from London as part of the team covering news around the games. We weren’t rights holders, but that’s another story.

My thoughts are with them too.

I was working on the BBC Home Desk the night this happened. I was an overnight duty editor at BBC News for 15 years. I only ever did nights.

These are my recollections.

1/12 I had an email from a colleague working on BBC Breakfast in Salford, the subject was “Seen this?”

Attached was a photo taken from Instagram showing the tower engulfed in flames.

On this day in 1991, I arrived in the UK from America. As big moves go, it was pretty easy. I had a ready made life as soon as I stepped off the plane.

1/? It was a job related move, my company offered me a position in their London office, but still working for my boss in New York. It was a weird gig, I sat in the Visnews newsroom, but I was doing corporate TV work for American companies.

It was 40 years ago today that John Lennon was killed. I was a 17 year old high school senior, living on the Jersey shore at the time. These are my memories.

#JohnLennon

1/33 Thread Lennon was actually killed very late on Monday the 8th of December. Howard Cosell broke the news during Monday Night Football.

I was already in bed, as I had classes early the next day.

I’ve got some sad news. A friend of mine recently passed away. Some of you may know him as well, @vince_howlett

Vince asked me to announce his passing on Twitter, when the time came

1/12 I met Vince here on Twitter, and we used to DM frequently.

He told me if I didn’t hear from him for 1 month, to take to Twitter & tell our mutual followers that he was gone.

Today marks the 4th anniversary of the publication of my book, “Personal Use”.

I wrote it while working for BBC News. Literally.

To mark the occasion, I am going to tweet out the story of how Personal Use came to be, all on the hashtag #PersonalUse

1/54 I explain the origin of my online identity in the book, but I will briefly summarise it here. I created the name northlondonhippy in 2004 to post on a forum about magic mushrooms. Then I used it for a blog. And I kept using it, and it stuck.
