Trump’s absolute last stand to subvert the election will come Jan. 6, when his allies in Congress say they may formally challenge Joe Biden’s victory.

It’s a complicated, little-used process that could get messy — but is unlikely to change anything. politico.com/news/2020/11/3…
Some House Democrats attempted to do this in 2001 and 2017, when Gore / Hillary Clinton won the popular vote but lost the Electoral College. Both times, no senators would join them, shutting down the process.

politico.com/news/2020/11/3…
This time, a handful of Senate Republicans have countenanced Trump’s baseless claims of widespread fraud. Rand Paul lodged his own over the weekend. politico.com/news/2020/11/3…
BUT: The Senate will likely be a 51-48 split on Jan. 6. David Perdue’s seat will be vacant as the results of his runoff are finalized.

And with Rs like Murkowski, Romney and Collins affirming Biden’s win, the math doesn’t work for Trump. politico.com/news/2020/11/3…

NEW: Trump allies released the Kraken. Only it can’t spell, is terrible at geography and keeps misidentifying plaintiffs.

The baseless fraud suits overseen by Powell/Wood have instead come to be defined by a growing list of blunders.

w/ @ZachMontellaro

politico.com/news/2020/12/0…
The errors have been significant. In a Wisconsin suit, they sought video footage from a voting center in Detroit. An affidavit in MI named a nonexistent county. And a legal expert mixed up MI communities with MN ones.

Judges tend to notice these things. politico.com/news/2020/12/0…
Powell acknowledges the errors and says they’re simply the result of being human and relying on a small team working around the clock. Her full statement:

NEW: Barr appointed DURHAM as a full special counsel -- with the same powers Mueller had -- on Oct. 19.

The appointment order: ImageImage

NEW: AG Barr's appointment of Durham as special counsel — kept secret for six weeks — creates a series of tripwires for the incoming Biden administration and whoever he designates to be attorney general.

NEW: Trump has pardoned former aide Michael FLYNN for lying to special counsel Mueller.

It's an extraordinary intervention on behalf of an ally who has spent the last two years fighting to overturn his original plea.

w/ @joshgerstein

politico.com/news/2020/11/2…
@joshgerstein This pardon has been expected for years, but Trump's delay shows how politically explosive the case became.

In the interim, Flynn became a MAGA icon and his attorney, Sidney Powell, has become Trump's top purveyor of unfounded election fraud claims.

politico.com/news/2020/11/2…
@joshgerstein While Flynn's effort to unravel his guilty plea was pending, Bill Barr oversaw his own estraordinary push to drop the charge against him, which is still pending before Judge Emmet Sullivan.

NEW: Trump’s effort to subvert the election is fading quickly, with today’s certification vote in Michigan a potential death knell. The legal and political pushes are both falling flat. Story w/ @ZachMontellaro

politico.com/news/2020/11/2…
@ZachMontellaro The Michigan board of canvassers is meeting now, and a former state elections chief is making clear that
the board has no option but to certify. Their only job is to verify that they have received the complete, certified results from counties.

@ZachMontellaro It appears that Michigan is headed for certification. A GOP board member, Aaron Van Langevelde, indicates he believes the board is essentially ministerial and has no role investigating fraud.

"We don’t have authority to conduct a trial on whether election fraud occurred."
