I've started this thread over and over again, trying to put into words what I've seen in 2020 through my work at Chalkbeat because I feel like some people still don't get it.

But I think it's better to show you.
I've seen a virus that was ugly from the outset in more ways than one. chalkbeat.org/2020/3/12/2117…
I've seen my team pull off an impossible collaboration that told the stories — your stories — of a day without school. A preview of only what was yet to come. chalkbeat.org/2020/3/17/2119…
I witnessed all the ways vulnerable communities were affected by the pandemic and, admittedly, read about student populations I would've never thought to check on during this time. chalkbeat.org/2020/3/18/2119…
I saw all the ways children would be affected by the decisions of adults. chalkbeat.org/2020/3/24/2119…
And the many ways we could uplift them. chalkbeat.org/2020/3/19/2119…
I saw the stories of people I love and care for reflected in our coverage. Stories that reminded me of my dad not being able to become an engineer because of barriers that still exist. chalkbeat.org/2020/4/8/21225…
And stories that reminded me of my mom. chalkbeat.org/2020/5/21/2126…
I saw my team manifest joy out of thin air. chalkbeat.org/2020/4/14/2122…
I saw who the pandemic was leaving behind. ny.chalkbeat.org/2020/4/30/2124…
I watched with pride as we asked for help for our local news brethren. chalkbeat.org/2020/5/8/21252…
And helped our communities in need. co.chalkbeat.org/21265830/denve…
Like a lot of you, I saw the video of George Floyd’s killing. Then I saw all the ways educators had to explain the racism, the brutality, and the cruelty of what they just saw to their students, and how they did it so compassionately from far away. chalkbeat.org/2020/5/31/2127…
I saw us say something very sensical that made a lot of people feel happy and valued. And made others angry enough to send hateful messages. chalkbeat.org/21280299/black…
I saw our website and social media pages taken over by our future leaders, saying more in six words than I can in this entire thread. projects.chalkbeat.org/student-takeov…
I saw gratitude from those students, who I can’t wait to work for one day.
I saw all the ways our country messed up with COVID-19, and who paid the price. chalkbeat.org/2020/7/23/2133…
I saw children proud of their parents. chalkbeat.org/2020/7/24/2133…
And parents worried for their children. chalkbeat.org/2020/8/6/21356…
I saw all the inequities that exist, and the ways they’ve worsened this year. chalkbeat.org/2020/9/11/2143…
And I saw all the ways my own newsroom is making sure we’re equal too. chalkbeat.org/2020/8/18/2137…
I saw an election that didn’t look anything like the others I’ve covered. And how teachers cut through all the noise to make sure their students came away with a positive lesson. chalkbeat.org/2020/10/21/215…
I saw who we’ve lost. detroit.chalkbeat.org/2020/4/20/2123…
The too many deaths to keep up with. ny.chalkbeat.org/2020/5/11/2125…
The smiles that are gone.
co.chalkbeat.org/2020/4/21/2123…
The way communities grieved. newark.chalkbeat.org/2020/5/20/2126…
And the way you missed them. detroit.chalkbeat.org/2020/3/31/2122…
The local news coverage I’ve seen out of all our bureaus this year has made me a smarter, more aware, and more compassionate human being. Stories that took my breath away, that made me cry, made me cheer. Stories that made me proud to work for @Chalkbeat.
If you have the means, consider supporting us this #GivingTuesday/#GivingNewsDay. This hasn’t been the 1st year at a new job I was imagining. But it’s been one filled with value, service & indescribable moments of pride bit.ly/2GU4qIa

As always, thank you for reading.
