Washington, D.C. –Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) issued the following statement on Attorney General William Barr’s appointment of U.S. Attorney John Durham as a special counsel:
“This order only further erodes the credibility of the Justice Department under Attorney General Barr’s tenure. On its face, this appointment appears to violate the Department’s own regulations—which stipulate, among other requirements,
that ‘the Special Counsel shall be selected from outside the United States Government.’ The sitting U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut is simply not eligible for the job.
In addition, the Attorney General has provided no real explanation for his decision to appoint a Special Counsel when he did, or for his decision to delay notification to Congress until today.
“And we should not lose sight of the larger picture: in the waning days of the Trump Administration, the Attorney General has once again used the powers of his office to settle old scores for the President.
This order is one more desperate attempt to feed President Trump’s fixation on events that have been investigated over and over again, including by the Department’s independent Inspector General.
It is a distraction to divert attention from the President’s failure to contain the COVID-19 pandemic and his resounding defeat in the presidential election.
“I have asked the Attorney General to call me and provide an explanation for this order without delay.”

Today, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Grant of Clemency granting a Full Pardon to General Michael T. Flynn. The President has pardoned General Flynn because he should never have been prosecuted.
An independent review of General Flynn’s case by the Department of Justice—conducted by respected career professionals—supports this conclusion. In fact, the Department of Justice has firmly concluded that the charges against General Flynn should be dropped.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Chairman of the House Armed Services Cmte, today issued the following statement after the White House announced the firing of Secretary of Defense Mark Esper via tweet, destabilizing the Pentagon ahead of the Presidential transition.
“In the national sec. community, it is well known that periods of presidential transition leave our country exposed to unique threats. Until President-Elect Biden* is sworn into office next January, it is imperative that the Pentagon remain under stable, experienced leadership.
WASHINGTON – Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, the first woman and person of color to hold this position, were announced the winners of the 2020 election.
“This election, Americans made a clear choice. They chose hope over fear, unity over division, and science over fiction. In the midst of a global pandemic and economic crisis, Americans expect us to lead.
Today’s announcement by Mr. Taylor demonstrates that he was clearly pursuing a self-serving, self-promoting agenda while at the Department of Homeland Security rather than pursuing an agenda aimed at securing the Homeland.
Having worked with Mr. Taylor on the President’s immigration and counter-terrorism policy agenda, I can attest that he never vocalized disagreement with the President’s policies – and in fact expressed strong support.
