During and after the 2016 presidential election, this balance appears to have broken down. While Democrats accused Republicans of simply trying to divert attention for political purposes,

“Simply put, the NSA dismantled the program because it was a serious failure.  The NSA used it to collect hundreds of millions of phone records.  But in 2018, it discovered that it had no authority to collect some of the records it was receiving.

Q    Do you want war with Iran, Mr. President?  Do you want war with Iran?

PRESIDENT TRUMP:  Do I want war?  I don’t want war with anybody.  I’m somebody that would like not to have war.  We have the strongest military in the world.
We’ve spent more than a trillion and a half dollars in the last short period of time on our military.  Nobody has even come close.  We have the best equipment in the world.  We have the best missiles.  And as you say, you just bought the Patriot system.

“This firing of the national security advisor is just the latest reminder that the Trump Administration’s foreign policy is in complete disarray. With negotiations on Afghanistan upended, vital negotiations with China stalled, North Korea ramping up dangerous tests,
Great Britain on the brink of crashing out of the EU, and Iran and Russia up to no good on any number of issues, American leadership is desperately needed around the world. Instead, our national security decision-making process is in chaos and America is less safe.
