1)This depressing statement says everything about the dearth of strategic thinking in Nigeria. When Nigeria hired PMCs in 2015 they came with well trained, well led, well equipped soldiers, air support & a logistics chain. This is what led to their successes.

2) So the question is why has Nigeria failed to develop a well trained, well equipped, supplied and led Army after 10 years of counter insurgency? South Africa’s Parabats were formed after SADF personnel attended a single course in the UK in 1961.
3)Portugal reformed its entire army in order to fight the colonial wars in Africa, Azerbaijan reformed its entire army to deliver victory in its recent war. Russia began reforms of its huge military after the terrible conflict in Chechnya.
4) All these countries got foreign assistance. Russia (ironically) was aided by the US, Azerbaijan by Turkey. Non of these militaries sought to bring foreigners to fight their wars, they learn lessons, got foreign assistance where needed & developed their own solutions.
5)The solution to Boko Haram is not mercenaries, it is a well trained, well led force, with a large mass of infantry supported by indirect fire and robust logistics.
6)One can only assume this talk of mercs is a prelude to a PMC being hired. But unless those mercs will also deploy to the North West, Kaduna, Niger State, Niger Delta or even to my village, Nigeria’s security problems will persist until there is honest security sector reform
7)And finally a military that brings foreigners in to protect a land and population that it has failed to protect loses all its legitimacy
