In today's thread, I'll be discussing Sleepless Domain created by Mary Cagle! It's another magical girl comic with some fantastical elements and a great character driven story to boot!~ Though I do have some reservations I want to discuss about it's overall direction. Thread⬇
This will have minor spoilers so keep that in mind when I continue onwards. These happen early on which is why I'm not giving a huge spoiler warning, but in case you wanted to read it before this point, at least do chapter 1 and 2 before reading more.
Plot: Sleepless Domain is a mysterious story about this weird city seemingly trapped in the middle of nowhere surrounded by monsters. In order to protect themselves, humanity has remained inside a barrier, but it's not perfect. As a result magical girls fight to keep the peace.
It's a really interesting set up for a webcomic and offers a lot of potential? Does it succeed? In my opinion, yes! It's a really fun set up that opens the way for many story opportunities later down the line. Cagle really does well in exploring the setting of this universe.
The idea of magical girls fighting to the death isn't a new one (especially since PMMM popularized it). However, what saves this work from being a complete gore-fest is how the universe is expanded upon. Magical girls do have regulations, rules, and most of all HOPE.
This video goes into it well, but a lot of these supposedly "mature" magical girl shows/webcomics seem to forget the one aspect that makes them memorable, which is having hope. You can't have hope without the despair:
The despair in this comic comes from the ideas of loss, sacrifice, and the monsters that roam in this world. You want to see the characters live BECAUSE their world is so precious to them. It's all they have being magical girls. Without this, the comic wouldn't work.
I want to see these characters make it out okay because of the hopeful times contrasting the bad ones. When these characters do go through their own struggles, you want to root for them because anyone can die at any moment. Speaking of which...
Story: I have to stop ignoring the elephant in the room before getting to the characters. Essentially in chapter 2, the main magical girl team, the Alchemicals, all die brutally in a fight. The pink lead, Aether sacrifices her powers to save the new blue lead, Undine.
This is an interesting take to make so early on in the comic and if the rest of it wasn't well-written I would criticize it more. However, while the overall execution was good, I still have reservations I'll mention now.
While the story moves at a steady pace (and picks up after this event), it also has to deal with setting up the system that the magical girls live in. As a result, this causes some conflictions as while I'm interested in the characters, I WANT to explore this new world as well.
This isn't our ordinary world with supernatural elements. This is a NEW world. So you can see the issues in which that you don't really know too much at the beginning. That's fine, but as a result, you don't know too much about the characters either.
Each Alchemical has their own unique personality for a standard magical girl team. In flashbacks we see them fleshed out a bit more, but that only happens after the main event occurs. Meaning the characters we are supposed to connect to don't get a lot of development.
While I wouldn't call the Alchemicals bland by any means (Cagle does a great job giving us insight into each character's lives and backstories) it just makes me wish I knew more about them so their deaths could have more of an emotional impact.
From a universal standpoint we see how the deaths of magical girls affect people such as Undine and the overall public perception of them being a huge thing in this world. And yet, when the Alchemicals died, while I was shocked, I can't say I was sad about it.
I care more about Heartful Punch and Undine (Alchemical Water) getting hurt/dying because it's clear they have issues besides their PTSD and guilt. They are by all means 3-d characters (same as Aether). I care because I got to learn more about them over the course of the comic.
However, with the OG Alchemicals, due to barely knowing anything about them besides their charming personalities, I can't develop that same connection as I do to Undine/Heartful Punch/ Rue/ Zoe because I don't know what the stakes are for them beyond death.
I do wonder if Cagle was trying to capture those conflicted feelings of loss and grief. It's rather hard to describe as people seemingly move on relatively quickly while you're stuck in a rut. I'm sure Undine does feel this way (spoilers: she does a lot!)
What could've made a "good" moment to great is having us, the audience, see more about what THEY, the Alchemcials famiies lost. Maybe having Undine visit their families or even meeting with a relative of theirs. Something to bridge that connection to really pull it all together.
I'm not sure if we'll ever get it, but considering the comic is not done yet, I do hope we get something. Other families in the comic get that reaction, but the OG team doesn't. But that's enough about my grievances with that, the rest of the webcomic is really REALLY good.
The characters: I have so much to say and so little time, so I'll say this, this is a webcomic that KNOWS how to handle bigger casts. Every character is important, has relevance, or adds to the story. I never felt that ONE character was completely useless. That says a lot!
You can clearly tell Cagle is building up to something with each character and the best part? They don't all revolve around the MC. They may have interactions with Undine, but other characters have their own relationships with other characters that benefits their growth.
I'll use Zoe as an example, she's a timid shy magical girl who just can't seem to catch a break. However, she doesn't go the obvious route and join Undine forming a new team. Instead, she finds another magical girl to team up with, Rue, who's also friends with Aether!
Just having interpersonal relationships like these really helps expand the character's personalities and the universe itself. It's nice to have a webcomic once in a while that doesn't revolve entirely around the MC ALL THE TIME. It's really refreshing.
I could on about each of the characters/side characters especially ones like Aether, but I really don't have the time to get into everything. I would say to just read the comic in itself for that. It's some good stuff I really don't want to spoil.
Art: Let's talk about the art. I could go on for hours, but I'm just going to say that the overall art direction and character designs are killer! The world does feel really like ours, but it also finds a way to maintain interest as a whole.
There are things people would consider odd that we don't in our world. Like not letting magical girls fight after they get their powers. Parents are more than willing to let their young teenage daughters fight for humanity and it's pretty interesting to say the least.
As a result, the world really reflects initial "shift" if I may call it that. When the barrier appears, you can instantly tell when stuff is going down. The ominous announcement that happens every time a battle starts really sets the mood.
I need to give Cagle praise in how the atmosphere of the comic is set up. Instead of just giving us physical queues we have sudden shifts in the designs that allow us to see how each character reacts to their environment and their growth.
The character designs are all lively and surprisingly really clever. All the magical girl teams are really interesting and have fun thematic concepts (literally in this case). I can't say I really hate any design or think that they're even bland. They're all fun and colorful.
That's not even getting onto the action. The action of this comic is surprisingly well done. The flow of the comic is simple enough, but also allows for some pretty dynamic fight scenes. I never felt lost of confused within the action, there's always something to guide your eyes.
Every character's abilities are clearly defined with the best part being that it never feels out of place with the comic. Having multiple abilities within a singular comic with almost several characters being introduced in new chapters sounds like a nightmare, but it works!
No one feels like they have a carbon copy of a power or that they just feel like a a downgrade of someone else's powers. Theses are generally really creative and I'd like to see more magical girl webcomics take inspiration from this one.
The comic is not without it's flaws however. Saved for the aforementioned issue I had getting to this point of the comic the only other major issue is in terms of development with Undine.
She is one of the best character's in the cast, but she also suffers from her arc being a little repetitious. I go by the rule of three in fiction. If some main event or idea is presented at least 3 times, it now holds more significance to the audience.
Undine has been repeated stated to run away from her problems and while this is a flaw she has to continually work on for the rest of the series, it is starting to be a little grating whenever she does get pressured after witnessing ANOTHER team fallout.
This isn't to say it's a bad character trait, rather that I hope that Undine gets some much needed progression soon. As I stated, the rule of three applies here and I do hope for Undine to resolve her aversion to conflict. It's something I struggle with to so I understand.
Overall, what do I think of Sleepless Domain? It's a fantastic comic within it's own right. While not without flaws, it's still a generally good read and I highly recommend it for any magical girl fan looking for something more dark without it being overtly edgy.

Magical Girl Site got brought up as an example of a good darker magical girl anime from my last thread. Honestly, I respectively disagree, mostly because I found the manga to be somewhat better and the anime adaptation really sensationalized.
Granted, this is less from a writing standpoint and more from a directional one, but I'm not a fan of how certain infamous scenes are directed. In the manga, they are horrifying, but the anime just seems to really ham it up or just go completely overboard with the tone.
As a result, it's hard to take much of anything seriously. The manga was a least subtle enough in while it had these issues, it still kept the darker tone consistent. It feels that with the anime there must've been some sort of communication issue because certain scenes drag ON.

Today we will be discussing Princess Love Pon created by Shauna J Grant! A cute webcomic that offers a surprising amount of charm, effort, and most of all, keeping the spirit of being a magical girl. How well does it do that task, let's dive into this thread!⬇ (Spoilers)
Background: I stumbled upon this comic completely by accident years ago when I was still on Tumblr. I saw the promotion for this comic and figured it would be a fun read. Please keep in mind that Tumblr is a...weird website to say least. Things tend to be hit or miss.
I have been burned by many other webcomics in the past and I didn't want to invest my time into something that wouldn't be good or just never be finished. However, I can safely say I'm glad I read this comic regardless. Why? Well let's see:

Here's a video about the most popular Precure Season! Keep in mind this uses google searches and understand that sequel seasons usually don't do as well (DISCUSSION)⬇
My thoughts are that it's hard to get a grasp on pretty cure seasons as they're mostly based on toy sales and viewership (they got to make money somehow). As a result, while a season can be good, it's popularity does not necessarily equate in sales. Keep that in mind.
I'm not surprised that the most popular overtime was the original series. Simply because it's become a pop cultural icon. Smile being extremely popular also doesn't surprise me either. This is simply because Smile in a sense is the most 'precure" essential season we got so far.

While it's fine to voice your insecurities, I also think similar to this comic. The healthier mindset is to take what other artists achieve in stride. Other people's successes don't negate your own. You shouldn't compare someone else's final destination to your journey.
The reason why I don't fret about younger artists achieving more than I could is because I want a better future for younger artists. Back in the 2000's, you were lucky to find a decent tutorial in an artbook for your specific tastes.
It really was a different time. The art scene had more close-knit communities in online boards/conventions which I didn't have access to. Anime and manga tutorials weren't even a thing unless you found it in a crappy how-to-draw manga book. I had to learn from scratch.

Meme aside, I've seen people fret about the idea of progressing in such little time, but it honestly depends on what YOUR idea of time is. To some people 2 years is A LOT of time, while for others it's can seem like nothing. Artistic progress is exponential rather than linear.
Many things can happen within a span of a year, month, weeks, or even days. A life-changing event can occur leaving you with more personal time. It can also have the opposite effect as well. You have less time to work on your art so you don't have as much time to spend.
As a result, you may see that time as precious and work to improve at a steady pace. It can also be that due to having more time, you have more chances to experiment and explore your artistic ideas. It really depends on your personal circumstances.
