Minutes of meetings of the 9th Empowered Group responsible for technology and data management during the COVID-19 crisis provide a picture of how data from Aarogya Setu is being integrated with different systems. 1/n
The documents suggest there is two-way sharing of data between Aarogya Setu and other databases which include the COVID India Portal and the Ayushman Bharat System. 2/n
During the meetings, concerns were raised about sharing of health data between so many databases. Govt officials also seem to be aware of the problem of false positives being reported by Aarogya Setu. 3/n
Besides Aarogya Setu, the documents contain several references to the ITIHAS system developed by Prof. Kamakoti for hotspot mapping and prediction which would be integrated with the COVID India Portal and Aarogya Setu data. 4/n
The documents also raise serious concerns about cell tower location tracking by DoT which was first used to track post lockdown movement of migrants and may be used for monitoring entry of persons who don't have a pass and reporting their phone numbers. 5/n
Finally, it should be noted that the legality of the 9th Empowered Group and the Aarogya Setu Data Protocol issued by it also stand on shaky footing. 6/n
These documents were obtained through months of RTI work which would not be possible without your support. Consider helping us keep up the good fight by becoming an IFF member today! 7/n

Read our proposal to the Govt of Kerala in light of the repeal of S.118A to help avoid any overbroad or unnecessary criminalisation of online speech while also ensuring abuse, threats or any of the harms that emerge on social media can be checked.
The repeal of the much criticised provision does not mean such proposals may not arise in future. Thus, we wrote to @vijayanpinarayi with recommendations on the process that may be followed to meet the objectives of checking online abuse, threats and misinformation.
2/n
1. Adoption of a public, deliberative process in drafting any provision to regulate online speech 2. Positive acknowledgment of the role of digital media 3. Seek clear legal opinion 4. Put any proposal to legislative scrutiny.

If you are worried about TV anchors getting their hands on people's personal text messages, you should pay attention to what's happening with the Committee for Reforms in Criminal Law. Read our submission to the Committee here. 1/n internetfreedom.in/criminal-law-r…
The Committee's mandate is so broad that it could affect everything from prosecution of individuals for social media posts to search and seizure of personal electronic devices. Here are the issues we identified which could impact digital rights particularly. 2/n
In the latest post, we focus on our submissions regarding law enforcement access to personal electronic devices and use of Section 144 to impose internet shutdowns and app bans, which are two core issues that IFF has been working on for a long time. 3/n
Remember #SaveTheInternet ? One of the core issues we dealt with beyond Net Neutrality, was the issue of licensing of online services. @TRAI finally made some excellent recommendations on it recently! 1/n internetfreedom.in/thank-you-trai…
@TRAI These recommendations push back against demands by telecom companies to: 1. Impose licensing on OTT Providers for revenue sharing 2. Creation of a super regulator to oversee all OTT services which would operate without any clear mandate 3. Break end-to-end encryption
2/n
@TRAI The TRAI has snubbed these demands, with clear categorical recommendations to the Department of Telecom which we support. We have written to them today, asking them to consider them positively and if any changes are made acting upon them to be done in a transparent manner. 3/n
