Courage manifests in different ways: physically, mentally, morally, emotionally. But all forms of courage are defined by the willingness to act in the face of adversity. None of those manifestations seem to apply to what Republicans are doing right now. #velshi
2/12
Republicans are standing by as Trump is potentially doing more harm to American democracy in the dying days of his administration than he did in the almost 4 destructive years that preceded them. #velshi
3/12
The “check engine” light in the Republican car has been red since early 2016, as Trump headed for his party’s nomination. The problem was serious then, but now the engine has seized, the tires are blown out and the car is careening out of control toward a cliff. #velshi
4/12
With VERY, very few exceptions, Republicans across this country are watching this disaster happen and holding their tongues. For those of you who think that’s their problem, it’s not. It’s ALL of our problem. #velshi
5/12
This past Wednesday, Trump released a 46-min edited video diatribe about the election results, calling it “the most important speech” he’s ever made. It contained nothing about COVID, the most critical issue we all face, but was riddled with lies about voter fraud. #velshi
6/12
It’s bad enough that Republicans encouraged Trump’s behavior in the early days after Joe Biden’s victory, but it’s been a month now. Enough is more than enough already. #velshi
7/12
Republicans should be objecting to every one of the fake hearings being held to demonstrate voter fraud, and every time the Giuliani clown car rolls into a another stop, and specifically, the U.S. president making baseless claims that undermine faith in democracy. #velshi
8/12
I can’t tell you how many times over the last 4 years I’ve heard people give Trump the benefit of the doubt, asking what damage he can actually do. Apparently, a lot. #velshi
9/12
Trump’s supporters are asking legislatures to overturn the will of the people, suggesting that Trump somehow cling to power. Who would have thought that in 2020 we would be discussing members of the Grand Old Party encouraging a coup?! #velshi
10/12
Let’s not be Pollyanna-ish and imagine Trump will ever actually concede defeat. But he can do a lot more damage in 46 days in office as the president of the world’s most powerful country. #velshi
11/12
Maybe Republicans can’t change Trump, but if members of the GOP plan to exist beyond Trump, they may want to display a little bit of courage. If not, we will remember them for having failed American democracy when it mattered most. #velshi
12/12
Trump lost, and he will not succeed in stealing this election. Not in the actual courts and not in the court of public opinion. But the quicker Republicans can encourage him to find the door, the better for them, and for the country. #velshi

Portland still bears the scars of a summer of protest—initially kicked off by police brutality & racial injustice, then fueled by federal agents operating violently & without accountability. A movement to #DefundThePolice grew there night by night. #velshi
2/12
Since then, the discussion about the meaning of #DefundThePolice has flourished. Is it a demand to end police funding or a more nuanced call to re-allocate some of the billions spent on policing toward addressing mental health, domestic violence & substance abuse? #velshi
3/12
The debate was renewed this week when former President Obama derided #DefundThePolice as a “snappy slogan.” Obama got some pushback from progressives who believe it’s not merely a slogan but, rather, a mandate. A very specific mandate. #velshi

I am standing today on the ancestral lands of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ, meaning “Seven Council Fires.” That is the proper name for the people referred to as the Sioux. #velshi

Most of Western South Dakota, and portions of neighboring North Dakota, Montana, Nebraska and Wyoming were part of what was once known as the Great Sioux Nation. #velshi
3/12
Here in South Dakota there are 9 federally recognized Native Nations: Cheyenne River, Crow Creek, Flandreau Santee, Lower Brule, Oglala, Rosebud, Sisseton-Wahpeton, Standing Rock and Yankton Sioux. #velshi
1/8 This week, there was movement. The General Services Administration, an independent agency of the U.S. government, acknowledged Joe Biden’s presidential victory and began formal transition procedures. #velshi
2/8 The GSA’s move opened the door for Biden to receive government data, make contact with federal agencies and gave his transition team access to government funding. #velshi
3/8 Trump has gone along with the decision, but he and his campaign continue to waste the court and the country’s time with baseless legal shenanigans. He also hasn't conceded defeat and likely won't. That takes humility and self-awareness, which are beyond his ability. #velshi

Thursday, Nov. 19, was the 157th anniversary of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. At only 275 words, it’s widely considered one of the greatest political speeches ever given. In it, Lincoln emphasized healing our divided nation, while bringing equality to all citizens. #velshi
2/12
Just as memorable as the opening words—“Four score and seven years ago”—is Lincoln’s conclusion that a “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” #velshi
3/12
It used to be obvious what Lincoln meant: everyone gets to vote, and their votes create and empower the government. I don’t think I’m exaggerating to say that that idea has felt, recently, like it’s slipping away. #velshi
BREAKING: A federal judge has rejected the Pennsylvania Trump lawsuit in which Rudy Giuliani was involved. He has dismissed the suit.
US District Court Judge Matthew Brann said the Trump campaign asked him to “disenfranchise almost seven million voters” and said he could not find any case in which a plaintiff “has sought such a drastic remedy in the contest of an election.”
With such request, he said, one might expect compelling legal argument “and factual proof of rampant corruption.” Instead, he said, “this court has been presented with strained legal arguments without merit and speculative accusations.”

Two lines tell you the story of the American economy right now. The first is the Dow Jones Industrial Average. It’s an index that measures the stock prices of 30 of America’s largest companies. #velshi
2/11
The other line isn't a graph. It’s this image of 6,000 cars at the North Texas Food Bank from @DallasNews. This week, the food bank distributed 600,000 lbs. of food, including 7,280 turkeys—enough for 25,000 people. That’s just one food bank, in one American city. #velshi

Those two lines explain what Joe Biden calls the “K-shaped recovery” in America. The top line of the “K” is up and to the right, for the investor class. The bottom line is down and to the right, for the working class, the working poor and the unemployed. #velshi
