Peter himself was a homeless drug user and decided a few years ago to go out and try and help those in the position he was once in.
He says that the @scotgov is digging it's heels in and refusing to open safe consumption rooms which could save
Lives of those in the most precarious situations.
Peter got to go to Denmark and see the now funded safe consumption van they have their.
The goal by 2021 is to have a sanctioned safe consumption room in Glasgow to help the 500+ drug users that exist.
Despite the personal risks that Peter is taking in running the safe consumption van he feels he must continue to do it.
Peter says that what the van offers is not illegal and that @policescotland themselves are beginning to reach out and connect with the van.
"We could get a safe consumption room set up without a change to the Misuse Of Drugs Act." - Peter
It seems like experts are all on-board and it could happen. We just need that final nod of approval - seems like a very frustrating situation.
It seems like a pilot scheme could be possible in the near future.
Civil liabilities seem to have been a sticking point in previous conversations. But Peter says this can be worked through and shouldn't be such a sticking point.
Peter feels we need the appointment of a new Lord Advocate and a majority support from the @theSNP party in the elections in May.
Peter feels that @NicolaSturgeon or @HumzaYousaf needs to be the one to step up and get the safe consumption rooms set up.
Q: how have people been accessing clean needles/safe consumption supplies during covid19?
A: pharmacies have stayed open. The safe consumption van & teams have been kept well stocked. Supplies aren't the issue. It's a safe space that's needed.
If people use drugs in a hostel or similar they can be kicked out and left sleeping rough.
Something that perhaps had been overlooked when providing emergency accommodation at the start of lockdown?
People are being left behind because of the budget cuts.
Q:have you noticed any self stigma when people access the van?
A: yes, a quote that comes to mind "never been treated like this before" People feel they don't deserve care. Society says drug users are bad and need to be
Hidden or sent to prison.
Really hard to hear how people are feeling.
Q: what's the vision?
A: low tech facilities that have volunteers to sit and be safe. Give them dignity and respect.
All of Peter's work is truly amazing and I really look forward to the day where
Safe consumption rooms are just a normal service available to those that need it.
That's the end if this session.
Thank you Peter & Nathan
