After #Moria fires in Sept #Greek gov moved 7.5K ppl to camp built on top of firing range. No soil testing was conducted prior to moving ppl there: shocking decision as firing ranges are known as commonly contaminated with lead. Check @hrw's report: hrw.org/news/2020/12/0…
Lead highly toxic to humans when ingested/inhaled, particularly by kids & during pregnancy @WHO says no known safe lead exposure. It degrades slowly, sites can remain dangerous for decades. Firing range was in use from 1926 until days before camp was built hrw.org/news/2020/12/0…
Even worse, #Greek gov failed to clear unexploded mortar projectiles and live small arms ammunition before moving ppl there, did wildly negligent clearance operations only after families with kids arrived hrw.org/news/2020/12/0…
To top it off, in last days gov launched major construction works at camp, which would normally be a good thing if improving camp conditions, but could also disturb any potentially lead-contaminated soil, which could further expose residents and workers hrw.org/news/2020/12/0…
Gov needs to immediately pause construction works, conduct soil testing, make results public. If it finds lead present in soil, it shld take steps to immediately end ppl’s exposure and treat any lead poisoning, particularly young kids and pregnant women hrw.org/news/2020/12/0…
