I used A LOT of smudge tool in this tutorial (basically smudge tool is my bestest friend). I highly recommend you to use it too if you want to have similar results.
Add new layer and paint (what I called) "base highlight" according to where you decide to put the lighting
Create new layer and add shadow
Create new layer and add another highlight
Create new layer and add another another highlight
Change this layer into overlay
Add final highlight and then smudge it
Now to make it prettier, I usually change the lineart color according to lighting. I use light brown, super light brown (?) for yet another highlight, and dark brown. You can improvising it however you want
Finish
In conclusion: use many variety of colors! If the main color is brown, then use 4, 5, or even 6 different brown colors to make highlights and shadow. Mind the lighting placement and you'll do good. The possibilities are endless
And smudge tool is a friend, use it wisely 😄
