For nearly two years now, I’ve been calling to #BreakUpBigTech—including Facebook. I’d said before that the purchases of WhatsApp and Instagram should never have been approved and need to be reversed. Today, the FTC and 48 states agreed.
Facebook is doing pretty well right now. They've acquired potential competitors WhatsApp and Instagram. More than 85% of all social networking traffic goes through sites owned or operated by Facebook. They've got a lot of power—and face little competition or accountability.
And they’ve wielded that power over everything—over our economy, our society, and our democracy. They’ve bulldozed competition, used our private information for profit, and tilted the playing field. And in the process, they have hurt small businesses and stifled innovation.
I want a government that makes sure everybody—even the biggest and most powerful companies in America—plays by the rules. And I want to make sure that the next generation of great American tech companies can flourish.
More competition means more options for consumers and content creators, and more pressure on companies like Facebook to address the glaring problems with their businesses. Healthy competition can solve a lot of problems and it’s how we can protect the future of the Internet.

Here’s a lingering effect COVID-19 will likely have on our economy: a rise in bankruptcies. The number of people filing for bankruptcy could hit records next year. Let’s talk about how my bill to overhaul consumer bankruptcy rules will help Americans get back on their feet:
Data show that families who declare bankruptcy aren’t reckless or irresponsible—90% declare bankruptcy for one of three reasons: a job loss, a medical problem, or a family breakup. This has been a problem for decades, and the pandemic will likely make it worse.
But right now, our bankruptcy system isn't working for working families. Many individuals and families who should file for bankruptcy don't, and many who do encounter obstacles that prevent them from getting the financial relief they need.
Holidays have been different this year. I’m holding onto joyful memories from years ago—like one time when my Aunt Max volunteered to handle the Thanksgiving turkey:
Aunt Max was funny and quick-talking. She never took anything too seriously, including time. And she wasn’t much of a cook, so the other sisters made sure that she was up to the task—peppering her with questions, making sure she'd get a big enough turkey.
Thanksgiving dinner was set for noon, and most of the family was there by mid-morning. The table was set. The sweet potato casseroles were out of the oven. The pies were on display. The Jell-O molds were out on special plates. Food was piled everywhere. But no Aunt Max.
No Supreme Court nominee has ever been confirmed this close to a presidential election? Republicans say “no problem” and plunge ahead with an illegitimate nomination made by a morally bankrupt president.
Rose Garden ceremony turns into a coronavirus superspreader event? Republicans brush it off and press ahead with hearings while members of the Judiciary Committee are in quarantine and others flat-out refuse to get tested.
