Lifetime has Fran Drescher playing hook up mom to her gay son at the same time that Ben Savage has a Jewish Christmas 23&Me movie premiering on Hallmark. You’re killing me.
I suspect the idea was Hanukkah programming...but Christmas.
“It’s kinda cool to have a Christmas tree in a restaurant. It’s a nice touch.” Ben Savage’s character, who apparently has never left the house in December ever.
The actress is sometimes 25 and sometimes 45. It is interesting.
It’s none of my business but those latkes were thicker than an Apple fritter.

Mini skirts. High heels. Formal titles. "Director So-and-so". And they called it a resume. This is already great content. #NSFHoliday
Cheryl is VERY SAD that she has to turn down so many NSF grants. #NSFHoliday
She was going to prove that a comet is behind Pluto (I have no idea if that's a real thing) but a team in Norway beat her to it. Failure. Grant rejections. Being beat to a publication. Already a LOT of realism 😭 #NSFHoliday
I have two questions and a critical update to share with y'all but first let me tell you why I have to do it quickly. For some reason today looked like: PT at butt crack of dawn, Roxane & I doing a research interview with a UNC student, recording two podcast sessions & two LORs
I don't know how this scheduling happened today but I know it is my fault. Anyway, two things that are concerning to me:
1. Is "Mexican hot chocolate" racist? It occurred to me that it is both too good & too ethnically specific to drink uncritically. Thank you.
2. Why do those inflated Christmas decorations in everyone's front yard in suburbia just sort of...die during the day? Are they supposed to do that or is there some gang going around murdering all the inflated snowmen and polar bears? Thank you.
@RissiPalmer told me previously that the guest picks the show’s playlist that week. It’s such a great window into the guest. Darius starts with Tracey Chapman. The minute you hear it, you go “of course!”
Yo. Darius has a word about not ever being lauded in Black media (along with Pride) that’s like...yeah. I know why and a lot of it is structural but it also hurts.
It’s a big night for Hallmark movies. One if it’s best produced (and maybe expensive?) and diverse Christmas series is back but FEATURING A BLACK LEAD.
The lead is Holly Robinson Peete, which is fine. But the real story here is the secondary character actress, Rukiya Bernard. She gets some serious screen time tonight and let me tell you why I notice that:
I have watched EVERY Black and Black biracial actress in a Hallmark Christmas property, wondering if they would find their right mix. It is hard because casting is very white and the genre requires an eternal Bambi quality that runs counter to every Black woman stereotype
I’ve been struggling with completing laundry lately. I get into the wash. I get it out of the wash. Back in the closet is a struggle. I recently learned that the 1 percent have washer dryers IN THEIR CLOSETS and I’ve never been so close to switching political parties.
Writing the syllabus (kinda - we are just gonna read some books, Uni is batshit for being open) and I’m reminded that this is my favorite tidbit to drop in a class: kottke.org/17/03/the-sati…
Anyway, the syllabus always starts as one looooong lecture draft. So far, I think we will focus on racial capitalism, information economy and social institutions.
I mean, the year is all a big crapshoot. Who knows how this goes. But, we will give it a go. I am arrogant enough to think it is my job to survey major theories of race and racism. I will focus on macro and meso theories because that's what I do:
