As Barbara Walters rightly said, Happy 31st Birthday to "the music industry" @taylorswift13
Here is a thread 🧵of interesting things our team knows about her
She was named after another singer/ songwriter James Taylor, and the two singers ended up sharing the stage
in 2011 to perform “Fire and rain” together. She is also named so because her mother believed that a gender-neutral
name would help forge her a better business career.
When she lived in Pennsylvania her family owned a 11-acre Christmas tree farm. She claims that it cemented in her an unnatural level of excitement about fall and then the holiday season. Can’t blame her.
Her mother wanted her to ride horses, and Taylor grew up around them. She had a Shetland pony named Ginger and rode horses competitively till she was 12 years old. Soon she realised she was more passionate about music (but you see them feature in her videos and photoshoots)
She learned how to play the guitar at 12, through a computer repairman called “Ronnie Kremer”, who was fixing her computer when he noticed the guitar in the corner of her room. The first song she played was the Sixpence None the Richer hit “Kiss me”.
She made her acting debut in the drama series CSI, in the year 2009. The character she played was of the teenager “Haley Jones”. She also performed music for the series.
In 2014, Taylor bought two adjacent penthouses in an old Tribeca building, converting them into a large duplex that has a total of 10 bedrooms. She bought these homes from the Lord of the Rings director Sir Peter Jackson.
She has three cats named- Meredith Grey, from Grey’s Anatomy, Olivia Benson from Law & Order, and Benjamin Button- from the curious case of Benjamin button.
She is also a big fan of ‘everything disney’ ( I mean who isn’t ?) and had a cameo role in the Disney Film Hannah Montana.
On to more recent news- she released evermore one day after Emily Dickinson's birthday, and it's worth noting here that Dickinson closed one of her most romantic poems penned for her lover Sue Gilbert, using the word "evermore" .
And even though we wouldn’t like to bring this up on her birthday, we need to mention her great sense of humour. She has a framed photograph of the infamous Kanye West encounter at her Nashville home, captioned, “Life is full of little interruptions.”
Oh and we have a quiz + AMA that you should check out!
Have you ever wondered if there is a definitive edition of the epic Mahabharata? The answer is YES! This epic that we heard from our grammaws & watched on TV were often different with minor variations. But for scholars there is one edition that is considered as definitive. A 🧵
To know more about this definitive edition we must peek into the history of one of India's unsung institutions, The Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (@BhandarkarI). Based in Pune, the institute first met in 1915, and was soon on its path to start its biggest project.
In 1918, the manuscripts that were under the aegis of the then Government of Bombay were transferred to the Institute. The history and the nature of the collection that is housed in the institute is fascinating in itself. To know more read: bori.ac.in/manuscript_dep…
Happy birthday to @RanaDaggubati. Here is an interesting story of how he got his most famous role of Bhallaladeva.
Did you know that one of the first people the producers of movie had in mind for Bhallaladeva was Jason Momoa, who played Khal Drogo from Game Of Thrones.
In the very early stages of scripting, SS Rajamouli invited a few people to his house and gave an indication of what he wanted to make.. No Story, just outlines.
He showed a map of a kingdom of Mahishmati - it had mountain ranges on 3 sides and a huge waterfall.
The waterfall was supposed to represent the unfathomable - people below will never be able to go on top of the waterfall.
Rajamouli explained the time period to be sometime after Ramayana and before Mahabharatha.
Today is the 60th anniversary of the first tied test match held at Brisbane. This test brought cricket back from the doldrums of the boring 50's and gave us this fantastic photograph..
A thread courtesy @tintin1107 about the story behind this photo.
At tea Australia were 109/6, chasing 233 in the final innings. A number of reporters based in Australia's other state capitals had folded their typewriters and, with their offices happy to save a night in a hotel, made a dash for the early evening flights.
How wrong were they.
The same was for photographers. But some game theory was at play - Ron Lovitt of Age and Harry Martin of Sydney Morning Herald were asked to leave only if the other left. Some game theory at play.
Shakuntala Devi is often described as "India's most famous woman mathematician". Her biopic led discussion like what does a mathematician do? Is mathematics all about performing massive computations? Or is there more to it?
A 🧵on Indian women mathematicians by @kaneenikasinha
Recall one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century: Srinivasa Ramanujan. The image that he evokes is that of someone sitting quietly, writing complicated but beautiful equations involving many symbols in his notebooks.
But, this thread attempts to explore the different things that a mathematician does. Along the way, we highlight some exceptional Indian women mathematicians as examples. #GWOM#womeninmath@GWOMaths@AWMmath
There has been a lot of news and fury regarding the furloughing of Jerry Quy also known as @Gunnersaurus. We are going to do a short thread about the origin of this creature.
Was @Gunnersaurus organically a result of some secret genetic experimentation by the @Arsenal board of the 1990s?
He was the product of a 1994 competition among the Junior Gunners fan club to decide upon a new mascot. Arsenal’s emblem is, of course, a cannon. The mascot’s primary role as a friendly face for young supporters - they wisely opted against basing the character on an war machinery
Put together, the team @IWTKQuiz is conversant in at least 9 Indian languages: Hindi, Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Marathi, Odiya, Tamil, Telugu, and Tulu. Naturally, we love multilingual people. Here is a short thread that you might enjoy!
