During an interview, a PD asked me for advice on how to recruit more women to his program. I realized many programs are trying to recruit women but face obstacles in doing so. See comments for my thoughts on what makes a program more female friendly! @theAPDR@AAWR#futureradres
1. Recruit female faculty! We want mentors who we can look up to, learn from, and grow because of. I’ve had wonderfully supportive M mentors who have been invaluable to my career, however, having strong F mentorship is something that cannot be replaced
2. Those female faculty you recruit would ideally be represented in every subspecialty area. I’d like to see that no matter which subspecialty I’m interested in, I will have F mentors along the way
3. Involve your F faculty in your interview day. If they are unable to be involved, highlight them in videos for the program.
4. Do you have women in leadership positions within your program? If not, are there any barriers to promotion your F faculty are facing?
5. Highlight your F faculty’s research endeavors. Show what kind of F mentorship is available for potential research projects
6. Make policies, such as parental leave, readily available. Also, make information, such as if you can use your sick days if your children get sick, readily available so that applicants don’t have to ask for this.
7. Do you have a women in radiology group? Is there a network of women in your program? If so, highlight this!
Given that women only comprise ~25-30% of radiology, I know not all programs are going to have a ton of F radiologists. I appreciate this PD’s effort. Luckily there are organizations such as @AAWR_org through which you can find plenty of F mentorship, no matter where you train 😀
