COVID Update December 14, 2020 (D-Day):

Today is a day filled with so many important reminders. 1/
First— on the vaccine. Today is not the day of triumph. It is not the day of victory over COVID. But today is the day when we showed up to the fight. 2/
Today is the day our troops landed on the beaches. And like Normandy, many many didn’t make it. They gave themselves not willingly but because the country proved defenseless. 3/
Unlike other wars, we have had 300,000 casualties. Civilian casualties. Casualties of people that did not have to die. People who lost an average of 10 years. Today is a day I remember them. 4/
I remember the individual ones I know including someone who died over the weekend.

I can tell you how I feel. That we will look at everyone who died before a vaccine is someone who was a less than needed sacrifice. 4/
That like people who died of polio in the 40s and early 50s, it was too soon. 5/
This is also a reminder that no one is out of harm’s way yet. We have begun to fight now. But the enemy will be undeterred until it finds no place to go. It seeps in in laughter & tears & shouts & close quarters & old buildings w no windows. 6/
Today is a reminder that our investments in science have a goddamn purpose. Do nothing elected officials that think government is bad & try to cut NIH & CDC lose the war today.

Ted Cruz, Freedom Caucus, tea party rhetoric. You would have doomed us. 7/
Today is also a reminder that we have screwed up every single stage of this battle so far & we could easily screw this stage up to.

We have let selfishness, politics, lack of foresight, lies & greed prevail. At a time when we need humanity to prevail, we were out of practice.8/
What makes us think that people who won’t mask for one another will willingly vaccinate for one another?

What makes us think that rumors & fear mongering & forces which put us against each other won’t prevail. 9/
We could easily make the mistake of just expecting other people to vaccinate. We could make the mistake of hoarding vaccinations. We could make the mistake of demonizing people w serious questions about the vaccine. 10/
These are the mistakes we make over & over. Burden others, succumb to misinformation, allow ourselves to be pitted against one another. Traps we now fall into routinely. And of course we fail to plan. 11/
So we can show up on the beach expecting all the work to be done for us & we will get slaughtered. We can storm the beaches but not be together, we lose. Vaccination programs are moments of unity.

Do we have those moments left in us? 12/
If we are inequitable
If we are unorganized
If we aren’t planful
If we bully
If we don’t listen to considerations
If we quit to early

...we will have messed this up to.
...and it will be sadly par for the course 13/
Today is also a reminder of why education matters, why STEM matters, why government matters, why civil servants matter. 14/
Today is also a reminder of why certain people frankly have no business in public life. People who believe in herd immunity were strongly strongly rebuked today. 15/
Their theory say how with 300,000 dead & possibly 15% of the population infected they had it badly badly wrong.

It was a deadly inhumane path. It was herd thinning. 16/
The chief among all herd thinners was Donald Trump. And it’s a good reminder that he took “no accountability.” 17/
It’s a good reminder that but for the scientists and the election, his strategy would have resulted in more than a million deaths. 18/
It’s a reminder that this is far from over. Hospitals around the country lack the resources & the personnel. Some are going on strike in the middle of this. Nursing homes are losing dozens at a time, including a Veterans’ home in Alabama. 19/
I am sickened. Just before the vaccine we are still seeing people die in massive numbers. People are still denying reality. 20/
Donald Trump wants credit. Here’s my opinion. You want credit— go fucking earn it.

Talk to your supporters about taking the vaccine.
Lead a transition not a temper tantrum.
Care about the hundreds of thousands who we lost by preventing more deaths in the weeks left. 21/
Today is a reminder that the electoral college, while it did a job today, doesn’t always and is a relic & needs to go. 22/
Today is a reminder that despite an election win there are many with a very different view of what this country should be. And much of that view needs to be better understood. And some of it just needs to be defeated. Sadly, continually. 23/
Today is D-Day. With all these flaws, warts, villains, losses, tragedies, ugliness & beauty to be reminded of, today is a reminder that goodness has prevailed. And we must protect it. /end

COVID Update December 16: Why you won’t hear me use the phrase “anti-vaxxer.” 1/
First let me tell you my opinion of vaccines. If they hadn’t been invented we would be so much worse off as a planet.

It’s probably a more important invention than Tik Tok. 2/
And the story of the first people who took vaccines is a story of “you’re serious. You’re going to put that in my body. GTFO.”

But the story with small pox goes (more or less) the first does went to the vaccine makers kid & when it worked all the next went to the king’s kids. 3/

January 6, I will be watching the Republicans in the House who plan to try to overturn the Electoral College and when they fail, will completely support those Congressional districts succeeding from the union as they threaten.

Best of luck.
It’s tough starting a new country under any circumstance. Having Mo Brooks instead of Thomas Jefferson and a handful of proud boys instead of Washington’s Army will add to the challenge.
(This is a rant, not a spelling bee.)

Secede, succeed.

Trump’s White House taking the vaccine tomorrow is a symbol of a larger problem.

I’m beginning to hear of privileged people who are like jumping. 1/
Hearing that companies involved in distribution are carving out small caches for their executives.

Not people who are CDC recommended. But people with bank.
This is deeply immoral and fitting with some of the worst traits of our country.

COVID Update December 11: The FDA did not hire you Donald Trump.

So STFU. 1/
Also Mark Meadows, with all due respect to your 11th grade chemistry teacher, pipe down. You’re not helping. 2/
Very often people say hey, did you hear what Donald Trump said??

I often say “No, please enlighten me. I’m eager to hear the esteemed thoughts of a learned & considered mind.” 3/

COVID Update December 9: 6 weeks ago we kicked off an effort to listen to the people on the front lines, essential workers & experts to paint an image of what needs to change.

Today, the first product, a set of recommendations to @transition46 Biden-Harris transition team.1/
This effort was carried out by @USofCare, the non-profit I founded 2 1/2 years ago & chair. This work is intended as a 1st step so we do not forget the lessons of the moment— even as we live through it.

And to give the Biden Administration & Congress specific recommendations.2/
It is essential that we capture more & more voices not heard before. Voices included a public survey, nurses, doctors, epidemiologists, HIV experts, disability advocates, mental health leaders & former state health officials & governors. 3/

COVID Update December 7: The first tranche of Joe Biden’s health team was announced today.

The picks have been roundly cheered by everyone in health care. They send several key messages. 1/
The Department of HHS is housed in a building named for a Minnesotan & former VP, Hubert Humphrey— a man who believed the true character of the country was how we cared for the old, the poor & the sick. 2/
But for the last 4 years, HHS has meant health for only a few & forgetting our humanity to all. 3/
